5l in place of 2lte. thoughts and input please
My Prado 2LTE is dying so I am hoping to replace it with a 5L or 3L if possible.
I want to swap over as much of the 2LTE parts as possible, turbo, alternator, injector pump to make the swap as easy/cheap as possible and also means the ECU, rev counter, injector pump is all just plug and play if possible.
I know I need to have a crank angle sensor for the ECU does this mean I should look at finding a 5LE or there an easy way to fit a sensor to the 3L or 5L?
Is it possible to re use the 2lte injector pump as is on a 3L or 5L or would it benefit from a rebuild with a larger plunger or any other mods. Or am I better off running a mech. pump and getting a tach. signal from somewhere else?
Do I use the 2lte injectors or ?
These are the only hang ups I can think of and I appreciate any constructive input. especially if there is anything else that could be an issue
I will be calling a Reconditioners on Monday to get their input in this.

easiest conversion is the 5le. i can't remember which IP is best. probably use the 2lte IP. you can tweak the solenoid to up the fuel or play around with the resistors.
will need to fit turbo drain to sump, other than that everything just swaps over and electrics plug straight in.
for the 5l a case of use mech IP and sort the tach. just the same as 3L (2.
conversion. if its auto theres a few other things.

Re: 5l in place of 2lte. thoughts and input please
Auto which is why I thought keeping the 2LTE IP would be best if possible.
have a handle on everything else, have done a few turbos onto 3L in the past.
Sump, thermostat housing and turbo water lines, Turbo oil feed etc., manifolds, all simple stuff there.
Just the E part of the 2LTE that stuffs this one up a bit.
IP, injectors and CAS are the only things I am trying to get a handle on for this one.

by mem you need tps and coolant sensors for the auto.
just comes down to what engine you can find.

you will be able to put everything onto the 5l and what sensors are on it should already work without needing the 2lte stuff, why not manual pump? other wise the fueling maybe a issue I would imagine, under fuealing in this case, as the 5l are a lower compression engine than the 2lte it will be a rocket ship with a 5lt in it
Give nath at kiapoi repowers a ring keith he will know what to do and need and is good with giving advice

Yep, aware that all the ancillaries, manifolds, and sensors etc. will swap straight over, but just need to sort the pump and Crank angle sensor.
I would like to keep the 2LTE pump as the auto tacho, etc. is all tied through the ECU.
Crank angle sensor doesn't exist on 3L or 5L, only 2LTE and 5LE, which is probably going to dictate which way I head in regards to manual or electric pump.
I am planning on calling Nathan and a few others in the coming week

for a 3l/5l a few guys i've heard of have managed to rig the crank sensor to run off the front pulley. getting the sensor in the right place will be a little tricky.
5l are slightly higher compression than the 2lte. it doesn't really make al that much difference except higher compression is easier to start.

I've done that with a 2l block in place of a 2lte it was fairly problematic,
it went fairly well but suffered a years worth of teething problems before we got it reliable enough to go play in the mud.
I'd be looking for a block that will accept the cas in factory position as running it off the front was a prick

problems are only a problem if you not willing to learn how to find solutions

I hear ya.
Looking for a reasonable priced 5LE at the moment to over come this.
Re: 5l in place of 2lte. thoughts and input please
The 5le computer won't allow for boost and the 2lte might not supply enough fuel for the 5le with a turbo on it?
Re: 5l in place of 2lte. thoughts and input please
could still be easier to work out another option for getting the auto to work and keeping the 5l pump. there are a few proven options out there from what I can tell.

Pete, I'm hoping, I think?, to keep the 2LTE ECU and pump if possible, but still trying to get my head around the options at the moment as to what will and won't work.
Wondering if 2LTE top can be fitted to 5L Pump? bigger plunger and ?? still to be researched.
If you have any links to relevant info I would appreciate it.

Hi Keith,
I have a turbo pump top off a 2.4 fitted on my 5L pump so they will work.
Mine is not a computer controlled pump though and just opens up with an increase in inlet manifold pressure from the super charger.
Cheers Richard

there is a few tricks you can do on the pump to increase the fueling. bit of info on the surf forum about it.
i don't know if you will run the 2lte at max or not or of the 5le pump has a bigger plunger or not.
but this is still academic as you still have to find an engine first. 5le/5l are not easy to find.
Re: 5l in place of 2lte. thoughts and input please
5L is easy enough to find, the 5LE however is a bit elusive at this stage.

Richard I was planning on a visit one evening to chew your ear about your motor and pump. (And those tyres)
2LTE pump is electronically controlled so still not sure if it can be made to work
Re: 5l in place of 2lte. thoughts and input please
have a look at these photos to compare to your 2lte pump. I have the spare 2lt pump still on the bench if you want me to measure anything. I wouldn't be surprised if the tops swapped over the pumps all seem pretty similar.

I think you will find the bottom of the pump is the same on both and the tops are interchangable on 2L, 2LTE , 3L etc
Go down to Heslops and ask them in the Diesel pump overhaul dept
Call in and have a look
Cheers Richard

Re: 5l in place of 2lte. thoughts and input please
i think you will find the two pumps are a fair bit different.
the obvious difference of the body is the 2l/3l/5l doesn't have the timer control valve location cast into it that the 2lte/5le one has.

Was thinking the same thing, but for my Ln106, with a smokey 3L, pity Im near the top of this island and it is near the bottom of the other
Re: 5l in place of 2lte. thoughts and input please
I would go for 1kzte any day over the older L series toyotas way more power.
Re: 5l in place of 2lte. thoughts and input please
Cheers guys but I will be staying with an L series engine. Going to a 1KZ may have bonuses, (I'm not convinced) but the cost of cert and rewiring etc. adds more $$$ to the cost of replacing the engine that I just can't afford. I can't really afford to replace this engine anyway...
Re: 5l in place of 2lte. thoughts and input please
Any of you chaps know how to tweak the resistors on the 5le pump to increase fuel??
