How do Kumho 834 MT perform?

Post by Herd »

I'm looking a purchasing a set of 5 x Kumho 834 MT 265/75R16 for my Safari GQ LWB EFI petrol? These will be a seperate set to the Dunlop Grandtrek which are fitted, judging by the tread, are for tarmac use. Only planning on participating in "Shinny trips" using the Kumho's. Can any tell me how they perform?
Cheers

One of the better trials guys runs them and gets top 15 results - although he's the only one running them.

They are not as good off road as the old 833 pattern - but you can't get them any more...

Hopefully they wear better on road than the old 833's - cos they were really soft and did not last at all - like 10,000km.

In the end I guess you get what you pay for - if you want long life and reasonably good traction, go for a reputable name brand, like a BFG RMT or a Cooper STT.

Looks like a copy of the good old BFG MT

I would try the KL71. I have been using them for 2 years and find they work well both on and off road. They are quiet and corner well on road and they throw mud off-road
search on trademe to get the best prices.

Hey iced johnno, How do you find those kl71 wear wise. I have been put of them as believe they wear fast due to a very soft compound which makes them behave well on road? Not good value if there 0nly good for 20000 ks

I find these tyres wear OK. Well actually for my driving styles they are running well. I choose to use only 31's cos I need the clearance to fit meaty chains.

Yes, I think my old BFG MT's would be lasting better. They were the old ones that were much harder than the current BFG MT KM's.
However I believe the KL-71's grip better off-road and are quieter and corner way better on-road, even than my newer BFG MT KM's. The KL-71's corner like a full road tyre, I believe the better construction, spiral wraps of the steel belting help too. They also have better side protection, and yes I have buggered a BFG MT KM by slicing through a sidewall on sharp rock.

My shorty KZJ-71 Prado normally has about 2.5 tonnes on board with recovery gear, tools and chains.

I have put 25000 kms on my rear KL-71 tyres and they have gone from 14mm tread to 10 in that time. I regularly drive at 140km/h and I usually try to keep my speed up through the corners too. Err sorry Orificer spelling mistake that's 14km/h!

A lot of my driving is on a windy coarse tar sealed road that I know well. Other regular driving is steep and over sharp frost-cracked rock in 4wd or continuous spinning with 4 chains on and filling the trailer by throwing rocks. see avatar!

Worn out in 20k! I'm the Mythbuster

Thanks for the advise. I've read some good 834 and KL71 reviews on offroadersexpress.com. The 834 tread pattern is very similar to some BFG's we had on my son's 86 SWB landcruiser. I was looking for a set of 5 - only to be used off road as I have a set of Dunlop Grandtreks for every day use. The KL71 are directional - the one think that concerned my was what happens when you have to put the spare KL71 on backwards - the mud gets forced into the grooves and you endup with a racing slick instead of a mud tyre. Other than that issue, I think the KL71 would out perforn the 834. After looking on trademe I ordered a set of 5 x 834s from Otahuhu Tyre Power - they gave me a very sharp price!
Cheers Herd. :)

How are people finding these now? Any indications on hope they preform in the wet on-road? I don't want them to be a liability....

yeah my first thought was BFG's too. I run 31x10.5 R15 KL71's good combination of on road and mud as the big center lugs help keep the edges from wearing when on tarseal, and the other thing I like about them is they clear the voids alot better then some other "branded" tyres when in sticky clay/mud.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
