on my diff i have pulled flange off wer drive shaft bolts to, to replace the pinion seal. how much play should there be? i can move the shaft up and down and pull it in and out. i no there should be some play but how much?

with the pinion nut and flange off there will be lots of movement as there is nothing there holding it tight, the nut on the end of the flange holds it all firm,dont over tighten that nut or you will damage the bearing. Did you make note of where it came off ie: where the little dent is in the side of it to lock it in place and how many turns to come off ?
