Odlins Rd

Post by mik641 »

Hi there can anyone comment on the condition of the road from the top of the aka's to maymorn junction? Am looking to do a bit of walking in there in the coming months and was wondering whether my standard suzuki jimny on road tyres would get me there?

Particulary up that very first bit away from the road looks a bit greasy. Only other 4x4ing i have done is round ocean beach and down to the steel gate at ruakokoputuna.

Cheers

Odlins is open, clear and easy access to the summit. Most recent trip to summit was 23rd December. Jimny on HT tyres should get up there easily.

Are you aiming to confuse people? That's a weird open ended question.

haha sorry was at work and bos was on the way haha here goes lol so I went all the way to the hutt this weekend just gone , we had 2 suzukis a lwb safari and a quad

got the hole way there and past the hutt

one corner that useto be tight is now easy some nice person has built a shelve in the bank so its easy to get across

the slip before the hutt must have made a horrendous noise because its massive ! we got across no worries the safari was a bit tight but got through no damage

found a few trampers at the hut they had walked in from otaki

hutt was in ok condition few shot gun blasts on it ( who the #### dose that ) and at the river there was a blowen up gas cylinder yet again why leave it there ?

all in all its doable and not as bad as im hearing from word of mouth

Classic.

Did you happen to notice the fresh sawdust, carved out path, laid down tree roots and rocks ?

The original post was is it ok to get to the summit, yup but some caution if greasy.
The rest of this post is talking about the track down to the hut.

mik641 if you have done the trip down to the gate at ruakok, im assuming you mean the Haurangi Rd to Southerlands hut, then you will be fine, they are similar.

Went in with lax2wlg on 25th Jan to the hut and beyond. I have a D/C Hilux and it was ok on some of those sharp bends but still needed care and a steady right foot, we both had moments where the back end started to slip into the washouts  .

So yes you can certainly get to the hut ok, but must a reasonable truck and driver to have some off road experience. Many years back when I was with CCVC it was short wheel base vehicles only.

Josh and I worked on some small parts of the track and chainsawed some dead fall back to stop ripping tyres and pushing the truck around.

Credit to those who worked on the slip to get it to where it is, if we all do a little to improve it each trip that would be great.
