Learning something new

Post by marmite89 »

Hi the name is reihana iv just brought my dads old 1990 Toyota hilux surf and I'm starting to get in to 4wheel driving. I don't know anything about mechanics except what my olman shows me other then that I get in there and try fix it myself.

Iv recently taken my auto hubs out cause they don't work and replaced with manual hubs but can't get my 4wd to engage would anyone have any idea as to what I can do to fix this. Thanks.

jack up all on all fours chuck her in gear and 4wd. Have a squizz underneath and see if the front d/shaft is turning.
If not check wee motor on back of transfercase.
If it is its ya vacuum actuator on the front diff.

Sorry mate I'm in chch. Iv found the actuator on the back of the gearbox and vac hose. Hose was fine but thinking have to take actuator off and open it up to see what's wrong cause whenever I lock hubs 4wd isn't engaging.

hold fire on that.

the hose is a breather. surfs run electric motor and if i recall right it won't engage the 4x4 if the diff isn't engaged.
check the basics, most common cause is the vac hose on the front diff are leaking. also check the electric connections on the diff are not damaged.
can also be 4x4 gear stick switch. put into low range to rule that out.
check fuses, 4x4 ecu doesn't get power 4x4 won't work.

there is a couple of common faults with the transfer electric motor but you can also damage the motor. so check basics first before pulling it apart.
