Synthetic winch rope

Post by snotgoblin »

Evening All,

I have around 50m of 12mm of Dyneema rope that I intend to put on to my Hi Mount winch.

I am struggling to find a Hawse type fairlead with bolt holes wide enough to fit the winch mount.

Has anyone out there kept using roller fairleads with synthetic rope? I can see that pinch and snagging might occur when under load and off centre winching.

Look forward to hearing the opinions and experience out there.

Chur.

Quadracer did on his comp truck 99% of the time it was fine but sometimes it would get tangled

make sure your rollers are smooth and snag free so cant damage rope either :D

Cheers fellas.

The rollers I have are in pretty good nick. I might treat them to a clean and lube though.

if its a 8274 highmount the bolt spacing's should be 254mm (10 inch), if its an asisn highmount I don't know what the bolt spacings are?

mudbits have 254mm hause fairleads listed on trademe, supercheap sell them and 4wdbits should have them

If its a high mount i doubt you will get 50mtrs on it i would have thought you would be pushing to get 35/40 mtrs of 12mm

Cheers monstr.

I was surprised at how much bigger than 12 mm brand new Dyneema actually is...

I will see how much I can get on first up and take it from there.

It is an Aisin high mount, so is a bit bigger across the bolt centres than 254mm

i used to run one of those as a back up winch ,thought it was far better than the warn ,free spools much better ,i used to run 40mtrs of 10mm found any more and it was prone to jumping over the side of the drum and if winching on say a 45deg angle and it spooled on one side it would jamb on one of the stays

Got all 50m on the drum. Went into work and hooked on to a big skip bin and walked the ruck down the rope.

Rope is close to part of the mount - so will mod that in due course.

Will go to hawse type fairlead too I think.

I use rollers as the ali ones get hot and "could"melt the rope.. which for me is no go.. Rollers in good condition will work better IMO as there is NO stress on the rope as it pass's over/on the fairlead.. but really it's your truck and you use it how you like..

You can also get plastic rollers as a replacement item... Not sure if they will fit your fairlead, but if you got a worn out one cheap and re-furbished it then it will be fine.. I use rollers and syn rope, i dont forsee issues 95 percent of the time i will use it...

Brain fart...

I wonder if I can make up some solid PTFE rollers, maybe with a steel sleeve...

Thinking out loud.

Cheers for all the input fellas.

That would work as long as it had the steel shaft and maybe metal end caps or the likes.. Great idea..
