advice with fuel issue

Post by mbw »

Hi

I need some help please!!

I'm having a problem with my cruiser. It has started to play up and has been getting worse.

I had a trip this last weekend and on the way home i started to loose power, at first when I kept the pedal down it would come back to life and run normally for a while, but it got worse. eventually to the point where It cut out totally, then I would have to pull over crank it a bit, then slowly start start building the revs up and I could take off for about 30 seconds, then have to repeat the process.

It played up a couple weeks ago and I thought it might be bad fuel, so I changed the fuel filter and cleaned out water/fuel separator.

I've just started it and let it rev until it cut out and taken fuel filter off. It was only about a quarter full.

Could it be a dodgy fuel pump? is there another filter in the fuel line that could be blocked?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like it could be sucking air, check the fuel lines from the tank up to the lift pump, if these are clear lines, have a look for air bubbles in the fuel line while the engine is running.
To get a definately check, by pass all the fuel lines by piping a jerry can directly to the pump and see if that cures it
Its better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

Thanks,

Do they have any sort of filter from the separator back to the tank?

I thought I might try blast some compressed air down the line to see if I can dislodge any possible blockages???

The pick up may have a gauze filter, but I'm guessing a perished hose with a little crack letting in air between the tank and the pump.

Just out of interest, could it possibly be caused by the fuel cap not releasing the vacuum pressure?
