td42 crankshaft oil seal gen or aftermarket

Postby muskie » Tue Jul 30, 2013 9:01 pm

as above, need to replace mine whilst its on the floor and before i put a new clutch in.. the genuine seal is over $100+gst on its own without the aluminium housing from nissan... which is why i am tempted to find aftermarket alternative. anyone had and bad experiences?? its one of those jobs you only want to do once.....

You must have gone to the wrong Nissan dealer. I got one for about $55 the other month from Nissan. It has been said before genuine seals are better but I've used aftermarket ones in diffs and various other places with no issues. Only when genuine for the rear main due to access being a major job, and hopefully they are worth the extra $$.

i picked up a crank seal from BNT this afternoon for $18, its only the rubber seal with the spring retainer, is this all I am after to do the seal? read somewhere that there is a metal shroud of some sort or can the new seal be installed into that?

I got quoted $97 from Nissan dealer in Hastings.

Try cockram Nissan in chch or gt Nissan in Wellington, I've dealt with them and have had some good pricing and service, normally parts from cockram are on your doorstep the morning after

I found Mayfield Motors (Blenheim) useful when looking for oddball parts, not that a rear main seal is odd. Good service and willing to ship parts. Forget the guys name I dealt with though..

North Shore Nissan (Takapuna) do some real sharp pricing normally too.

I'm just going through this at the moment myself, the turbo models come with the alloy housing hence the price differences. So I've been told anyways.
