80 series brakes

The brakes in my 80 series are average at best. If I had to panic stop, I wouldn't be able to brake quick enough. Is there any way to improve the brakes? Do aftermarket braided brake hoses help at all? Cheers.

they would probably help... but if you were going to go braided you'll may as well go the full hog and get all the lines.

Cheers. Don't know much about brakes/brake lines, but what other lines would i replace? - not the metal ones?

replacing your hoses with braided or any other kind of hose wont make any difference unless your existing hoses are failing and starting to bulge under pressure all you'll achieve is a hole in your bank account and still have poor brakes, have you pulled your brakes down to check the condition of the pads and checked all the calliper pistons are free and working properly, if the pads are wearing unevenly that's a sure sign you've got some seized pistons, the brakes were always a bit under engineered and average until they upgraded them around 1994 era when they went to 16 inch rims to fit over the size of the larger brakes

My first option would be to look at better pads (bendix 4WD compound is very good), machine or replace the front rotors, new lines (braided helps but isn't essential), new fluid, and make sure the calipers and the rubbers are all in good shape and are greased/slide freely. Then make sure the rear is in good shape, Slave cylinders and shoes 100% then make sure they are adjusted, then do a full system bleed.

If they are still shite, then you may need to look at some form of upgrade.

Yes, check all the above first including master cylinder condition and that they are bled properly then look at upgrading pad material.

And don't forget the rotors.

Most 80s with 100kms or more have pretty average brakes. Getting everything back to new (or almost new) condition will make the brakes work fine, as good as your average yota anyway.

As most have already said, I have 91 brakes in my truck, 15" rims fit so all good..
I have replaced front and rear rotors, new pads(cheapest I could find = $10 a set, all from BNT) Made sure that the pistons are all working correctly and bleed the system and I must say they are AWESOME.. Even the hand brake works great.. If there is any wear on the rotor it'll have a big influence on how good they are..
I went for cheapest in my truck because it'll get thrashed and didn't want to put expensive gear in as it'll only get fkd..
Expensive is not always best.. just how you are going to treat them will determine the price range..

Same with me, new pots, pads and discs and the cruiser stops better than the prado did.
