$10,000 mitzy

Post by 1000dollamitzy »

Well hello folks, I know it has been a while since I have posted much on here, so thought it was time to embarrass myself once again.

I know you all think I am a little crazy, what with starting off by buying 4 pajeros and then a half finished Lada, the only reason my wife hasn't divorced me is that I haven't yet brought a ford, although the Lada was a close call.

Anyways I am now onto a new project which is being built at the same time as the Lada. This is a complete rebuild of a 1989 LWB 2.5TD Pajero.

This is a vehicle that I have had sitting in the shed for a while with a blown motor, but everything else is in pretty good nick, and seeing as I still don't really like driving the Gen 2 pajero I have and I loved the old Gen 1 pajero that I inadvertently sold I decided it was time to do a reshuffle in the garage and get something I enjoy driving again.   What that says about my mental capacity I am not sure, but what the heck :D :D

So here is a couple of pics of it when I went to pick it up out of the shed

Image

Image

And here is the list of mods that will be getting done

Brand new engine
Front and rear difflocks
New ARB compressor so I have onboard air as well as the lockers
wheels and tyres off the V6 gen 1
PTO winch
frount bar - maybe
spot lights - maybe
new 2.5" exhaust
rf radio
tinted windows
seat covers
paint touch-ups
snorkel
New radiator
Breathers on diffs/transferbox/gearbox
new brakes
EGT Gauge

I think that about covers it. It doesn't really need the lockers but they were just sitting in Peppe so figured they might as well go into the new truck. Also had the PTO winch sitting on the garage floor, so in that goes.

It will be used as my run around wagon/family wagon/tow wagon/soft 4WD trip wagon.

Cheers

Thanks Guys

What do you mean you are freezing your ass off, I thought you liked the cold. your name being Mr Ice and all

Buy the way, Donna said the new Landy looks pretty swish

Yep sounds like fun, although this one wont be used to do anything too hard, this one will be my shiny truck, would like to keep this on all 4 wheels at all times and not have it full of dents and scratches. Will use the Lada for the crazy stuff      Just have to get Mr DeRanged to finish it :? :? :? :? :?

Here s a pic of the engine, brand new, out of the box, 4D56T manufactured by Hyundai under licence from Mitsubishi. You can eat off this baby 8) 8) 8) 8)

Image

Image

Only 6k including GST, cheaper than a recond one at that price as it includes new turbo, fuel pump, injectors, clutch, alt, etc etc

So it will be a race between Frankie the wonder mechanic and Mr Deranged as to who will get which truck finished first, the new Paj or the Lada

OK, so I was looking at getting a new intercooler as well, but decided that seeing as the old one was in pretty good condition and fitted without doing a whole lot of modification that the old one would do the job just fine.

However it was rather full of oil so really needed a bit of a cleanout in order for it to function effectively.

After doing a bit of research it turned out there was a couple of ways to clean these things. One was to spend several thousand dollars on an ultrasonic cleaner big enough to stick the whole intercooler in, or the other option was to fill it up with a fancy emulsifying degreaser and leave it for an hour or so and then rinse it out.

Seeing as I am already spending 3 times more than the truck will be worth at the end of the project I went with plan "B" :)

So for those of you who don't know how to clean your intercooler here is what I did.

Firstly I pulled the intercooler out from all of its appendages.

Then I removed the temp sensor, then blanked off that hole temporarily, stuck it in a bin and filled it up with degreaser.

Image

You cant quite see the degreaser inside because it kept slowly running out of my not quite blanked off temp sensor hole at the bottom :? :? So I had to keep topping it back up again every 10 minutes or so.

I also sprayed all the fins with a degreaser out of a can.

Once everything had sat for about 3/4 of an hour I then tipped all the now black degreaser out and rinsed with water for about 10 minutes.

Here's a pic of the degreaser, it wasn't cheap, but I had it on good authority that it is the best stuff you can get for this sort of job.

Image

And here's a pic of the now sparkly clean and far more efficient intercooler reassembled ready to go back into the truck.

Looking foward to more tales of destruction, suggest before fitting that nice shiny new engine that you remove the egr system, will stop filthy exhaust gases going into your spotless motor

Thanks Dr Pc, it will still be boring old build pics for a while, but I am sure once I have a couple of running trucks again the mayhem will ensue, especially the Lada 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Hmmmm, yes great minds think alike zukmeista (except for the destruction bit :( :( :( :( ) just had that exact conversation with the mechanic only 10 minutes ago, they will blank off both ends of the EGR device at the same time as fitting the EGT probe.

One of Frankies boys hard at work pulling what is left of the old motor out.

Thanks Mr Ice, it will be cool, but probably not -28 degrees cool

Peppe is having all the good stuff stripped out like the lockers radio etc and then will go back on trademe for a marginally cheaper price than I had it on before :? :? :? :? :? :? Probably will still sell quicker :o :o

Damit, there's only one thing for it, we need to go find a big mud hole and get Mr Ice stuck in it for a couple of hours again.

Best therapy out there I reckon

Anyone got a truck that is actually running, I reckon I could one of the paj's on the road in a pinch, although I will need to sell the house to put gas in it being the 3.5L one................ :( :( :( :(

Anyway after high jacking my own thread I think its about time I got back to some updates

Progress is being made, the rear locker is in and the boys gave the truck a bit of a wash so it looked all nice and sparkly :D :D :D

Image

A much cleaner engine bay

Image

The engine is getting ready to go in, the aircon pump is on and we just need to locate the correct bracket for the power steer pump, and install the probe for the EGT gauge

Image

Also the new oil pickup is on and the old sump has had a bit of a birthday.

Image

I have also been working on getting the location of the EGT gauge sorted.

Image

Because the dash is not flat, I had to make up a small custom wood step for the binnacle to sit on.

Also gave everything a bit of a lick of paint although the colour hasn't turned out as well as I had hoped being a bit bright, but I can fix that later if I am still not happy once the rest of the truck is finished.

I could try and maybe dust some matt black over the top as an overspray, any suggestions greatly received :) :) :)

Turns out scundgy blue is really hard to replicate :( :(

Maybe mix the blue with some grey, rather than black, to get a closer 'scungy' look

I have 2 discos running at the min, and mr ice has runners but he is 50,000,000 miles away in the arctic. Wait til he gets back, and hopefully by then my back will be better, and we will organise a run with all the usual suspects

Sounds like a plan, why don't we keep it simple and run up one of the rivers, burying my gen 2 paj in the river is probably about the best thing for it

Not to mention the write up will give all our fans out there something to laugh at

Then we can all be late for your birthday party together because we will still be digging ourselves out of the river 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Well its all getting a bit exciting now, the new motor is in and then out and then in again, and then out again, and in and out and in and out and finally in!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

Frankie the wonder mechanic reckoned it was all a piece of cake, one of his mechanics reckoned there much much profanity issuing forth from under the hood, think I am more included to believe the second story more than the first :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :?

So there has been a lot of swapping parts from the old motor to the new, including flywheels and other various ancillaries. But never the less here is the pictures of the $10,000mitzy with its new heart.

Image

Image

Here is a pic of the new race alloy radiator that is going in, it is slightly bigger than the old one, which is also causing a couple of small headaches.
But that's why I'm paying Frankie the wonder mechanic the big bucks....... :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Image

The snorkel is in, and they are just improving the flow a bit as the current bendy bit inside the guard is a bit restrictive, so some more small modifications will get done here too.

Image

I am also thinking now of putting a water/meth injection kit in it just to help the EGT's when towing and to give it a bit more poke when needed. There seem to be lots of good reports on these kits, so will look into that once I get the thing up and running as it looks like something that can easily be fitted afterwards.

Also guys the run on the 29th looks like it will be a goer, assuming the river does not flood in the mean time. Anyone welcome, we will be meeting at the Maraekakaho monument domain at around 10am on the Saturday morning. Will be an easy shiny trip, but should be a bit of fun, and we will be home by 5pm for Mr Ices Birthday. Honest Mrs Ice we will be back in time, I promise, as long as nothing goes wrong that is...........which it could I suppose.......going on our past track record........but I am sure this time it will be all fine

Update time, the boys are making progress, the radiator is in now, and they have had the motor running, runs sweet as a nut apparently :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Image

They are just trying to locate a couple of hoses for the intakes at present.

Unfortunately they found a little bit of rust under the front guard, so this will need to be fixed before it goes any further :( :( :( :( :( :(
