just purchased 1995 LWB vitara

Post by dan88 »

hi all

I have just brought a 1995 LWB vitara with the 2.0L V6, manual. It has a few issues
1. as far as I can tell from reading up on it, it has a worn input shaft bearing in the gear box. where can i get e new bearing in wellington?

2. it has rust at the base of the front pillars. best thing to do with that?

3. kind of rattles when it starts, is this the timing chain?

thanks in advance for the help

Clutch release bearing. Autostop or bnt are generally the cheapest.
Probably a good time to do the whole clutch while its out

How many km's? The manuals on these a recon at some stage in their life and the timing chains can prematurely fail. Interesting comment about the tensioner in one of the earlier posts, defiantly worth looking into it.

Another thing on mine that rattled when cold were the hydraulic lifters, I changed the oil (use the correct type) and this alleviated the problem.

Try an oil change and use good oil then reassess the situation. I'm pretty sure the timing chain rattle occurs at most engine speeds and the tappet rattle will occur more it startup unless the lifter is completely stuffed.

hi all

managed to pull the whole gear box out of the vitara, what a mission! spent about 3 hours trying to get one exhaust bolt out. thinking that with the amount of effort to get the gearbox out i might aswell replace the clutch, thrust bearing and all the bearings inside the gearbox and transfer case. i was only planing on repplacing the bearings in the gear box.

thought or comments?

thanks for the reply, got the gearbox back in, would be great to get someone else's opinion on the vit, its got some issues but not sure if thats just how vits are. midway through installing an alarm at the moment to keep the local scumbags at bay. but looks like i might need to do the timing chain soon which will be a real mish
