Extended diff breathers

Post by hunter1084 »

Just looking at extending the diff breathers on my Jimny, is there anything bad about using a garden hose or should I use a hose with a psi rating or something like that?

And just wondering what to put on the end of the hose, where would be my best bet to buy a one way valve? Ive heard of people putting filters on so i'd love to know what sort of filters they are using.

Cheers

garden hose would work but its far too big you want something around 3-5mm ID +/- you don't need anything pressure rated as your trying to keep everything at neutral pressure, you need to get them up high so they are out of the water so you don't get any back feeding and fill your diffs up with water, if you put a filter on the end its only to prevent contamination with shit, crap, dust etc going down the tubes into your diffs, if you don't put a filter on them bend the tubes over at a nice radius 180 degree bend so they are pointing down and you shouldn't have problems with shit going down them. Don't forget just because you've got breathers doesn't mean water wont travel past the axle seals and fill your diffs up with water anyway..... waters pretty clever like that :D the best protection is to check the oil after you've done a bit of river work. You can put a breather on your transfer case as well but probably not your gearbox they usually breath and equalise out of the gearlever hole they aren't sealed other than a dust seal.

If you were thinking of sleeving some garden hose over the existing breathers you don't want to do it that way the breathers have 1 way valves in them that usually block up and restrict with oil and crap so that'll make your extended hoses and breathers useless you need to take the fittings off and take them down to ENZED or a hose fitting place and they'll find you some new fittings with a hose barb that doesn't have a 1 way valve

Cheers for that might shoot down to mitre 10 and see what sorta hose they have there. I dont think i'm going to bother with gearbox and transfer case at the moment as I dont plan on going in to deep of water.

I know the stock breathers you have to pry the cap off, it'd be great if it just had bolt in breathers like some trucks.

Think I might look around for a one way valve I can put into end of hose then might be the safest way.

I used oil rated hose as garden hose doesn't like oil and will go hard over time, cost about $50 for the right stuff but cheap insurance for ya diffs. And just used generic plastic supercheap fuel filters on the end of the hose.
