id stay away from any v6 as the tend to skip timing chains and blow up.

Only the 2.0v6 suffered premature timing chain failure.
The pre gv v6 had early rear main seal failure.
The 2.0 v6 also had crank case breather issues and can blow blue smoke due to it. Its a reasonably easy though.
If you want economy, the 1.6 is the ticket. If you want more torque the v6s are good but thirsty.
Another option is the 2.0 4 cylinder, that's supposedly a good engine.
All the 4 stage auto trans are pretty trouble free, the 5 speed manuals are known to give bearing trouble.
The cream of the crop to me is the 2.7 v6 with the 5 stage auto.

Out of the lot I would go the J20A if you can, the G16A/B are known for cracking blocks and heads.
