Make sure cable adjustment is fully slack, then tighten each wheel until it cannot be spun by hand, then back it off till its just not rubbing. Finally tighten up cable adjuster.
Did you clean the oil off the new rotor/drums?

pretty much what I have done ...as for the oil on the drums there didnt appear to be any , how ever I did give them a wipe with a rag.
The discs are working well under hard braking at about 60k locks up all four and pulls up straight (on a gravel road)
Have taken them off again (the disc/drums) and think that maybe I havnt wound up the adjusters enough , both sides show the only sign of contact (between shoe and drum) is on the top half and the adjuster is on the bottom and in writing this thinking will do the adjustment again , cant remember if I let the cable right off.........thanks for that.

They have a thin oil film on them to stop them rusting during storage/ shipping etc. Pays to use brakeclean etc to clean em up (doesn't change them much, but sure makes rag get dirty!). Helps to aid bed in etc not having the film there

OK so have adjusted as above and gave them a clean with brakeclean and a rag , its better but still hopeless , what gets me I thought twice before touching the shoes as they were still lookin good and the hanbrake worked real well but I thought what the hell its a birthday.
Have had a wee study cant see anything obvious , is there something I could have put on back to front maybe???
Anyone have a workshop manual or know of any on the net you dont have to pay a arm and a leg for??

Thanks . :(

Go for a drive & get the rears heated up with the handbrake slightly on.
It uses a slightly different contact patch as opposed to using the foot brake but its a good leg up for the pads to start to bed in and hopefully get rid of most of the oil present and take out some machining marks on the drums.
Mine we horrible after I did a similar rebuild and when they were cold they would squeal, creak, screech and i did everything in the book to try stop them, chamfering edges, anti squeal on rubbing surfaces, etc. hopeless.

Fixed after a 10 min on the motorway stint into town with hand brake on thinking the pads were stuffed and i had to replace them anyways and was a last ditch effort to try to get them to work and they did.

my rule of thumb is hand brakes should have 3 clicks of free play before engaging pads to drums.
Manual says 98N of force to travel x distance but thats too hard for most people.

When doing my apprenticeship we were always told to start with the shoes and adjust the so BOTH shoes are rubbing but just so you can just turn it by hand.when you stick the drum back on, check both shoes are sitting and pushing evenly, from memory there is a hole on the back to get to the adjustor, so click and tighten until they rub - just, if done correctly the second or third click should hold the vehicle on a one in four slope.

If you pull the hand brake on and drive you glaze the brakes by over heating them and you would have to sand off the glazed heated surfaces, after taking it apart again, plus stretching cables, links etc. The glaze doesn't help them stick but slide, particularly in the wet.

Just remember the rears on early Terranos the road driving brakes are different to the parking brake, and the parking brake is designed for holding once stopped, not for stopping the vehicle, that is done by the rear disks on the outside.
