nissan terrano electrical problems

Post by kiers117 »

I have a nissan terrano 1991 2.7TD and after spending 1600 fixing the $#@&*^ gearbox every gauge stopped working as I pulled into my driveway. The speedo still works obviously but rev counter fuel temperature all reading nothing but the battery light stays on.

Checked all the fuses and Volts on the batteries are ok, my next idea was to borrow two batteries and throw them in and see what happens (dual battery truck).

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Should have about 13.8v at idle.

Sounds like the cluster has lost its earth.

Thanks for the tips I have a volt meter and will check it later. If it is a bad earth would that be a simple as un-bolting the earth and going over the surface it connects to with a wire brush?

Check your fuses again as you have lost the power to the gauges. The fuse for the gauges also does the reverse lights.
If the gauge fuse blows while driving the battery light will turn on as there is voltage coming out of the warning light terminal of the alternator and no voltage at the gauge cluster.

Alternator has output is 13.3 on both batteries which will just eat through batteries abit quicker than 13.8 I assume?

I checked all and found no blown fuses. I will rip the dash apart later and check the cluster, will I just be looking for loose wires not full connected?

Thanks again for the help

Would that have any effect on why my gauges are not working? I have taken the dash apart and check all the connections which seem to be fine.

If I have no voltage at the gauge cluster how can this be fixed?

Do you have a multimeter? You need to check the plug, one of the pins will be +12v supply for the gauges etc.

That lowish voltage won't cause your alternator light to come on.

Ended up being one of the fuses. checked them all with a multimeter and found one sitting at 3 volts so replaced it and all fixed. Thanks for all the posts.
