Newbie with slow 1991 4X4 hilux ute

Post by Intoodeep »

My Hilux ute needs some more GO, it is dropping down to 60 KPH on some hills on the open road holding up traffic.

HELP, is there anything I can do without replacing the engine like disconnecting the 4X4 somehow and making it a 2WD?

Cheers,

Matty

Replace diesel and air filters, doing that made a huge difference when I first bought my 1989 2.8 NA diesel hilux ute. (improvement 60km/h to 65 km/h on a steep hill on the way to work, on flatter stuff it sits on 100km/h

Or get the engine rebuilt (just did mine due to low compression and excessive oil use) fuel economy has improved and I can now do 70km/h up that steep hill.

Some will suggest a turbo, but I can't see the point in stressing my rebuilt engine, just live with slow open road performance, with front and rear lockers mine goes well offroad.

You are only running in 2wd on road (Hopefully).
What size tyres are you running, if larger than factory they will reduce your speed especially on hills, but it may be a case of dropping down a gear and keeping the revs up a bit.
If it is still slow then look into filters, air and fuel in particular.
But remember it is a slow diesel and don't expect too much out of in the speed department.
I have a Prado running a 2.4 diesel so I know how you feel.

You guys grizzle about the performance of a 3L. You should have been about when the L diesel was the go. My first 'lux was a 2.2 diesel 4 speed. That was balls out at 105kph on the flat (I put over 200 000 kms on that ute). When I brought a '94 2.8 lux in 1995, it was like a rocket ship. Even now I have an old hiace with the 3L that has done 450 000kms and is still going good.
But if you are after a drizzle that can boogie a bit, go the 1kz. Failing that, look at something with spark plugs.

The old 2.8n/a diesel is a strong donkey but not really a speed delivering power plant. What till you try and drive the same hill with some extra weight

No disrespect mate but "Hilux" and "Slow" fit in the same sentence together "Hilux" and "Fast" don't fit in the same sentence

to keep it in context a hilux is a heavy underpowered brick with low horsepower so your not going to get it to go much faster without replacing the horsepower part or ripping all the body work off to significantly reduce the weight :D

Buying a 2.4 or 2.8 hilux and complaining that it is slow is like slamming your dick in a door and complaining that it hurt.

Try driving an Sd23 powered 4x4 navara then get in your hilux, It will make your hilux feel like a hotrod.
