3y petrol or a 2.4 turbo diesel?

Post by francesco »

Hi, I'm thinking about buying another Hilux. Roughly 1990's (after my 2.4 TD was stolen several months ago).
On trademe I found one 3Y petrol (it's a 2.0) and the usual 2.4 TD.
Both seem in good shape, I was wondering your thoughts on which has the best longevity (for both, mileage is around 250k already) and gives all round good results.
I'm looking to buy a lifted one, but it will be used mainly on road.
Thanks everyone for your opinions!

they are both old underpowered trucks getting pretty long in the tooth these days, personally I'd be looking for the one in the best nick rather than petrol vs coal burner

if your set on one of these trucks and after mainly a road truck i would pick the 3y petrol. the motors are pretty strong compared to the 2.4td hand grenade with a loose pin. I think the 2.4td are the worst model for cracking heads and going pop out of the toyota diesel range

my hunting buddy had a 3y powered surf and it was just as slow as my 2.8 diesel up porters pass here in canterbury, but other than that went very well and didnt give him much grief over the ten years he had it.

If either one was to go boom the 3y would be cheaper to repair/replace than the diesel. a full rebuild on the 2.4td starts at around the 3k mark and not entirely sure on the cost of a petrol rebuild as ive never known/heard anyone to rebuild them, i think i remember seeing a thread on here where a guy bought a brand new crate motor from sta parts for 2k of the 3y.

Also if you happen to see the v6 petrols as well be careful of them as well as they also like to overheat and crack heads

I have had both. Really did enjoy the 3y, mine was electronic injection and was much nicer to drive that the 2L-t. I would only consider the 2L-t if it had a really good history.

I had a 3y surf with weber carb done up exaust ect and it was great down low but took a while to get to 100km and didnt like staying there and used a lot of gas.
had a few mates with the 2.4s in tue older and newer modle surfs too and they where still gutless but managed to get up and cruise better
