I recently noticed the glow plug light coming on after the motor had started. The time delay seems variable - about 50 secs when cold ( ambient here is around 15 deg C) and 8-10 when hot.
After a little investigation, what I have found so far is that from cold, with the ignition key in the 'glow' position, the glow indicator comes on for ~ 3 sec, power to the busbar comes on for 8 sec, off for 2, on for 3. If I start the truck when the dash light goes out, it starts just fine, and there is power to the busbar as soon as the engine fires, and as far as I can tell, stays on.
I'm thinking faulty timer, but despite taking most of the dash panels off, I've not been able to find it!
I have a copy of a FSM for the 1HZ, but it's dated Feb 1990, and lists HZJ70, 73, 75 and 80 series as applicable models, so I'm not confident the diagnostics ( even if I could find the bl***y timer!) are relevant.
Questions;
On a 2003 HZJ79R where is the glow timer located?
Any other thoughts what the problem might be?
Cheers for any help!

Re: HZJ79 glow plug problem
Its probably not a stand alone timer, it will be part of the engine/egr controller. They are normally behind the glove box.
Re: HZJ79 glow plug problem
That would explain why I couldn't find it! The engine/egr controller I found as you say, above the glove box. Does any one have a copy of the relevant section of the FSM or an electrical diagram?

Re: HZJ79 glow plug problem
This afternoon, I checked, and found that the EGR controller has a wire going to it from one side of the glow relay coil, so it looks like it does control the glow plugs. The other side of the coil goes to the chassis. Thanks ChurchurDan for the info.
Has anyone had any experience of repairing or replacing the EGR controller?

Re: HZJ79 glow plug problem
I normally just fit an after market timer to operate the glow plugs.
