Calling all commy conversion guys

Post by De-Ranged »

Got a bit of a problem.... picked up a spare trans for the toy was told it was a stage one Commy trans (TH700r4) catch is I'm pulling it apart to get the rear output shaft out so I can shorten it and the valve body is not in my GM trans book... there is nothing close lol
I'm going to need new gaskets and seals so I need to confirm a model, tolerances etc and confirm that I get the valve balls in the right galleries

I have blown a whole day searching the net trying to find a PDF of a shop manual
Anyone out there hit this and solved it, got a PDF or a manual

Cheers Reece

these are the pans from all the trans that have been bolted to the Buick block whether in its orignal 8 cylinder design or 6 cylinder redesign or what platform it was used in by GM or GMH. Image

Image Number Transmission(s) ------------------------Pan Bolts
1 Aluminum Powerglide ------------------------------14
2 TH200 (Metric), TH200C (Metric)-------------------11
3 TH250, TH250C, TH350, TH350C, TH375B --------13
4 TH375C, TH400, TH475, 3L80, 3L80HD------------13
5 TH2004R--------------------------------------------16
6 TH700R4, 4L60, 4L60E-----------------------------16
7 4L80E ----------------------------------------------17

most likely scenario is you have a 4L60 and the one you have pulled down is a L60E which had an ECU. it atleast be a 92 vintage...95 onwards they had a torque converter lockup and will have PWM stamped on the casing below the input shaft and had a 5th solenoid valve body.

they are not interchangable and to top it off in 96 they changed the valve body again

Thanks for that... pretty certain that what I've got on the bench is the 4L60 based off some searching after your post
Tell me you wouldn't know if there was a pressure switch in this model
as this doesn't have it or wires n plug for one... in fact my loom is only 3 wires

Will check out the trans in the truck to see what that is now lol almost tempted to put money on it that it will be a 4L60E

Lol will owe you a beer if we ever meet

4L60 will have a kick-down cable and no pressure switch, 4L60e will not have a cable.

nah i think only the 4L60e had the pressure switch to tell the computer what gear was selected.

should be a white sticker on the side of the trans will have 2H,3H or 4H on it , 2h and 3h being the full manual trans ie no electrical trickery.
found the 2h and 3h to be the best for burnouts as they won't kick into 2nd like the other trans when you hit the limiter,
they also withstand the odd drive to reverse shift at full noise,
obviously not recommended.... unless burnouts
problems are only a problem if you not willing to learn how to find solutions
