RD28 smoking and missing at idle

Post by Bones Pettifer »

My RD28 has just started missing slightly and smoking at idle. Seems to come right once the revs get up a bit. Put a new fuel filter on today, but no change.
Checked fuel lines for visible leaks.
Is there a leak letting air into the fuel maybe???
I recall having that problem ages ago, is there a simple method for detecting such leaks.

Yes, there is a simple check. Disconnect fuel line from filter to pump inlet, and also the fuel pump outlet, and replace with a clear piece of pipe (garden stores or hardware stores often have it- doesn't need to be fuel proof for the short test).
Start engine and watch for bubbles flowing with the fuel (there shouldn't be any).
If none going in, but has bubbles on outlet its the pump sucking in air, if its got them going it try clear line pre-filter, or try a temporary fuel tank.
Another test (less accurate) is to manually pump primer with engine idling and see if idle improves.

Hi mate just a quick thought does it run a egr system? if so pull the pipe off the egr valve had a pajero at work yesterday with same problem pulled the pipe from the egr valve and problem went away.

EGR was blanked off ages ago.
Put some clear hose in the line and it did seem to have a few bubbles very slowly creeping through, but when i put it on a quite fast idle for quite a while it went fine, no smoke and no miss.
But when i put it back to idle it ran good for a while then back to the missing and smoking again, did this 3 times with the same result.
Any thoughts??
Could it be an injector failure maybe???

Ok Try pumping the primer top when its missing and smoking if it clears u might have a slight fuel blockage try taking the banjo bolt out of the fuel inlet side of the injector pump to check the little gauze filter it could be blocked up a bit. if that checks out ok try running a fuel can with a rubber hose to filter inlet this will eliminate any pipes or tank problems. if that doesn't work and its still the same the front seal of the injector pump could be leaking causing it to suck air. or u could have a dribbling injector. does it knock when its missing and smoking?

Yeah it does knock when missing, the injectors are due for a service.

Did bubbles go away when it was running nicely?
I reckon its running poorly at idle due to low pump speed (feed pump) not moving enough diesel, higher rpm pump moves it so theres enough fuel for high pressure pump. Check for any restrictions to fuel flow (have you tried a tempory fuel tank?).

I ended up taken out number 3 injector which is the one that was missing.
Had it tested and apparently it was fine.
Fitted it back into the engine and its is now running fine again.
I am not sure what fixed the problem, but its back to normal apart from a very faint miss under deceleration at low revs.
Will wait and see what, if anything, happens.
