Can you limp a Surf home with front drivers side axle out?

Post by bronx89 »

Can you (slowly) drive a KZN130 Surf with the drivers side front axle removed completely? Mate needs to limp his Surf home - I'm under the impression you should be able to drive it with it removed but can anyone here give a definitive answer?

Thank you

I did this with a solid axle ln106 hilux, front left axle and cv out, the cv came out in pieces.
I drove 40kms home no problem.
Mine does however have manual hubs, so the drivers side was disengaged and transfer case in 2wd.

Yes will be fine, may need to drain diff oil.

you need to remove the drive flange on the hub if the axle is broken and in place?>

I think he's got the same issue I had a few weeks back, from the sounds of it his CV has shat itself. He said it's making narly noises front right side and the axle can slide back and forth about 10-15mm (estimate). Has a "binding metallic loose metal noise" he said. Sounds like the bearings are flopping around.

So if he jacks it up and takes the axle out and the drive flange hub (what the tri-bearing slides in to?) off it'll be ok to drive home?

Diff need to be drained?? Really??

Not sure, depends if C.V. bolts to flange on diff or end of axle slides in.

Nothing stopping you from unbolting the CV assembly from the diff and taking it out as it doesn't have any affect on the driveline or suspension at all. Just make sure to plug the hole where the outer drive end of the CV goes into the hub to prevent crap from getting in.

Drove from Blenheim to Timaru no worries with one missing.

However, the noise described could be wheel bearings on their way out.

Yea not too sure - it's a KZN130, '95 or '94 can't remember but one of the two, does anyone else know what needs to be taken out and drained or what the story is to limp it home without the front right axle?

The CV assembly is attached to the diff flanges by 6 threaded studs and nuts, so you don't have to deal with the diff at all when removing these on an IFS (non solid front) Surf or Hilux.

Yep does this flange on the diff need to be removed though or can the axle just be pulled out?

After all that it's thrown a wheel bearing, real bad, so it'll be staying put tonight

Good to know the axle can just come out and truck still be driven though

Cheers
