GU airbags / td42t rocker gear

Post by slidenyo »

I got myself a 97 gu safari factory td42 turbo auto,
noob questions as this is the newest 4wd that I've owned.
airbags and 4wds are there any precautions that must be taken to ensure they don't go off if I have a bump with something?
are airbag compliant bullbars just bars with mounting points for the factory sensors?
also I have heard that the factory rocker gear can need refacing?
I have a stem seal floating so will investigate that this week and get my feeler gauges out to look at the source of my tapping....
any experience or advice would be greatly appreciated
cheers Jase

Im not sure about all vehicles but the ones i have delt with dont so much as have sensors up the front but 1 usually mounted towards the trans tunnel under the radio area (in the cabin).

The air bag compliant bars have crumple zones in them to allow the bar to deform and send the normal decealerartion forces to the sensors during a crash. This is important as this changes the timing of the deployment of the bag......too soon and its half flat when your face makes it there for a kiss, too late and your in for a mighty punch in the face as you will be right over the wheel/dash when it deploys. Basically putting it they wont go off unless you need it, in which case you will be happy you had them. Hope that helps a little.

Cheers

the airbag compatible bullbars have rectangular crush tubes on the mounts between the bar and the chassi. when being pulled i.e. winching snatching towing another vehicle backwards they are just as strong as conventional steel mountings. when excessive force goes the other way they "crush" absorbing the impact.

I say excessive as a normal knock bang bash at low speed off roading wont effect them, we a talking the massive G forces involved in head on collisions.

All of nissan's airbag systems are triggered by the G force sensor under the center console between the two front seats.

In my case since ARB don't make a bar for the facelift R20 I ended up removing the airbag system and swapping out hte steering wheel for one from a base model D22 nissan navara

building your own bar or retrofitting another to a previously airbag equipped vehicle will need certification, so do it along with other mods like suspension etc.

Not all airbag compatible ARBs for all makes necessarily have crush cans. Depends on the front end chassis for particular makes and models.

Also, I understand removing an airbag needs certification and can only be done on a vehicle older than 14 years.

good point, mine is a 98 so probably why it was never mentioned. something else to take into consideration.

I have removed the air bags from my surf (1996) as when I fitted the SAS I ended up welding the crush dimples on the chassis so they required removing for cert. If your adding granddad bars that go over the front wheel arch you need to make some sort of slider that wont prevent the bull bar from moving back........they joys on newer 4x4's huh

We are in Oakura ,
the rocker shaft wears worst at the back of the shaft , Also the tappets wear where the pad contacts the valve ,

.3 but you need to remove the rocker shaft to inspect if they are recessed or not , also need to remove the rear rocker of the shaft to inspect the shaft ,
