Front end clicking

Post by p.marsh »

Ok so I took the safari out to Woodhill yesterday and it has started "clicking" when i am turning and in 4wd. The click speeds up when i go faster. It only happens when i am turning. Is this a shot CV? Or maybe something to do with the hubs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't get too worried- it's just a sign of wear. No great urgency to replace - but it is a sign you should carry a spare. Try to avoid lots of power while turning and it'll last a long time. Maybe worth pulling it and packing some more grease in if you need to get into the hub for any other reason like wheel bearings, etc...

Genuine Nissan ones are expensive, but the knock-off's can be a lottery. I tried 2 REPCO ones at around $100-odd each, & they sheared on the stub-axle and broke the hubs as well so it was false economy. The genuine ones are stronger and tend to shatter the ball housings. Then as long as you get out of 4WD and unlock the hubs pretty quick you have a good chance of not damaging anything else. When it does break, remove the bits as soon as you can or you'll destroy the axle splines and/or damage the whole hub.

Second hand Nissan CV's come up on trademe frequently, and expect to pay $120 - $150 each - but quite likely will get an axle shaft with it...
