I have exactly the same set with exactly the same problem - seems common with them, I googled and tried numerous things, it seems related to the squelch. Haven't heard of anyone have any decent fix without replacing parts, so seems best to replace radios.
Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

cheers for the replies, has any one tried a new factory battery pack, costs around $38 from memory?. To see if it's just a battery problem?A new radio set is around $170.. If other guys have the same problem then looks like I will have to suck the kumara and buy new.......

Haven't tried a new battery pack but have swapped packs from functioning radios to the dud ones and the problem stays with te radio not the battery. They get locked in RX mode, seems like it might be due to a connection going dry or a component giving up.
