Adding bigger air filter, any good??

Post by Stuck »

Hey guys,

Coming from the world of the sr20det, Iv learned that with any petrol powered turbo car, getting lots of air in is the easiest power increase, what about diesels??

My terrano isnt really gutless or anything, but im always up for a little more bhp!

Was in BNT today buying an oil filter, and thought I may as well do the air filter too. But just as I was about to buy it, I stopped and wondered whether it'd be worth throwing in a big K&N filter, or something similar..

...And who better to ask than you guys?

I had a look under the bonnet, and theres shitloads of room there, i'd be able to get a LOT more air intake, surely thatll be a gain in power?!?

Image

I could even move the rear window washer bottle elsewhere, would put the intake further from all the engine heat etc....

Image

Anyone know what this hose is for?? Ill probably have to toss that bit if I put another filter in there, but can hook it up elsewhere if I need to??

Image

Any info would be great, im sure you guys have done this before, was it worth it?? Thanks!!

I have a mate with a terrano. Put a pod in the LF wheel arch, a 600x300x76mm intercooler out front and 15psi boost. Can keep both 30x9.5's smoking in 3rd on a dry road! However, a grass paddock is about as off road as it goes, it simply tows his moto-x bike.

a pod filter is gonna be good for sucking up mud and water.... fit a Finer filter(flash washable filter) into your factory housing.. http://www.uniflow.com.au/

NZ distributor

then you have a sealed washable pod filer effectively.

Hmmmm. That hose. I remember it from mine. It runs right accross in front of the radiator to the other side of the engine bay. I think (very hazy memory) it goes to a black vacume cyclinder in the middle of the right hand side gaurd. I think

Its a vacume hose anyway, and it serves a purpose, but will be easy enough to plumb back into your new intake

So what ya reckon? Big K&N, or uprated standard filter? I dont do alot of really muddy 4x4ing, this terrano's more of a road bitch

If its a road bitch put a big filter on it or if you do do a bit of offroad replace the original with a K&N or better yet a uni-filter

Yeah intercooler, crank the boost up, crank the fuel up(warning:more black smoke), bigger air filter and she'll be doing skids lol   . The more air the better maybe a snorkel increases a bit of power but i didn't notice a massive difference when i put one on. If its not going to be used off road that much then big K&N is the story.

Cool thanks heaps for that.. Now its just a matter of price, from memory, a decent sized K&N is up over $100, so ill price up an uprated std filter too..

Ill put up a pic when its done, in case any other terrano owner is thinkin the same..

After doing the intake mod on my Korando, there is a noticable power increase.

Ok, I start with 120BHP as stock, but she pulls better from low revs, accelerates faster slight increase in economy.
That last could be because i have just clocked up 33,000 KM so she is just about run-in now.

Look HERE for pic of my air mod.

http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/images/albums/album203/new_air_filter.jpg

the idea was two fold, one, to lift intake clear of water levels when swimming.
Two, to reduce resistance to airflow for turbo.

Damn that looks good bud. Like the stainless intake pipe!

Finished work early today, so im in the process of finding one now.. All that anyone really seems to have is the size you have, I was hoping for something with a bit more surface area.. Will keep looking and prob settle for that in the end

Bloody hell.

Couldnt ask for a better upgrade for so little cash..

The old filter was well due for replacement, which probably makes the difference even more vivid, but damn, like Moriarty said above, the low down power is much better, but even on boost the difference is noticeable.. Im well happy!!

When I took off the old filter and housing, I measured the intake pipe and it was about 60mm, but could be stretched out to 2 1/2 inches (~63mm) easily enough, so bought a nice new washable Fram filter also with 2 1/2 outlet, theyre new on the market but look good, and at $75 it seemed a good deal for a well known brand. Went to the local exhaust shop, got a 50mm length of 2 1/2 inch pipe, connected it all together and got this...

Job jobbed, and recomended to all!!

Am still thinking of running a pipe from the front to the filter, bit of cold air induction, just to make it even more worth it...

Give serious thought to sheilding the intake filter from water splashes. Mount it as high under the bonnet as you can, Dont worry too much about a cold air feed, this will only be an issue when parked with engine runnig, or going very slow, then no issue at all.
When galloping down the road, enuff cold air will get under bonnet anyway.

One day, we will both have schnorekills!!!

Wanganui Radiator repair COULD make you an intercooler of the shape and size you req, I was in there a few weeks back and they have samples of I/C and oil cooler cores. give em a chat!

Oh yeah I defo wanna get an intercooler, and will talk to them! I didnt know if anyone here would be capable of that.. Might see if they can modify one that I bring in, will work out cheaper id say.. People are always selling smaller old top/side/front mount i/c's on TM for next to nothin.

Cheers for that!

Oh i had another play today, ended up chopping, drilling and moving the bracket for the rear window washer bottle. Bought more tube, painted it black, and put the filter away from the dirty warmth of the motor lol.. Gonna price up some sheet metal tomorow and make a cold air box type thing, or water splash resistor, you know what I mean
