SJ410 Build Ideas?

Post by Pureora Bush Guy »

I have a sj410 pretty standard has a 1500 Toyota engine in it that needs replacing eventually and I'm after ideas of what to put in it without doing too much work cutting the firewall or anything like that prefer it to bolt straight in if possible and any ideas people have had building one of these. thanks in advance

Drive train is to weak on the 410 for more power. Drive it as is or get rid of it and get a 413 or better still a Samurai then your open to the Escudo 1600 conversion which is the most common on these models. Sj410, although looking like the 413/Samurai is a different beast and is best left as is.

The only weaker things on 410's compared to 413's is the smaller c.v.'s but 413 axles and c.v.'s are a bolt in. Some 410's had smaller prop/driveshafts, not sure if there is a strength difference as I think the smaller ones were solid compared to the hollow larger ones. You are going to have to give more information if you want better answers on an engine conversion, i.e. fabrication skills etc as there is very little that will bolt straight in with no mods. What size tyres do you have on this thing, suzukis respond very well to lower gearing with big tyres and this may give you back the power big tyres have stolen.

Keep the 410 diffs as they are lower geared, just swap the axels and c.v.'s over. Possible cheap option for lower gearing is diff gears out of an LJ50/80, the LJ80's are 4.5:1 and Lj50 is 4.8:1 from memory. Standard 410 is 4.1:1.
If you are only running 30" tyres the power shouldn't be too bad, are there any issues with the current motor?

current motor burning oil, need to rebuild or replace, and looking to go to a possible 33 inch tyre or 31 depending on what it will handle

Toyota engines seemed be popular a while ago when they were cheap and plentiful, now its just as cheap and far easier to put a bigger Suzuki motor in. I've got a 1600 vitara sohc in my 413 will see how that goes with 31s once its running. Im not sure in regards to the 410, but the 413 is a matter of a couple hundy dollars for an adapter kit and it bolts straight in, F10A engine likely different tho

have been told a 1300 swift engine and gearbox bolts pretty much straight in with minimal changes.

Swift not as easy as you make it sound. Do some research. There is an issue with the distributor as they are east west in the swift. 1600 vitara carb is easiest, I did 1600 16v efi vitara motor which I think is the best power gains for least effort, if you want more effort I'd go 4age

I'd say they mean swift engine and sj413 box, I'd be doubtful a fwd box would be an easy fit into a red setup unless you plan on welding the driveshaft flanges onto the fwd outputs instead of a transfer case. Having said that, if the 1300 box and block fits (head won't without major work unless you want the dizzy sticking thru the firewall I've got not heads sitting next to each other here) then it will just be a matter of a sj413 box and an adapter kit and you can bolt any g16 motor in. Got a spare box here
