PTO winch or Electric
PTO winch or Electric
Looking at getting a winch for my cruiser FJ70, thinking either a factory PTO if I can find one or a runva winch. What would be the better option?
Re: PTO winch or Electric
depends 0on what you need..? self recovery or recovering others? PTO will go all day long as long as engine is going.. electric only as good as ya batteries.. and even then will only last a little while.. up to you..

Bit of both really, probably hardly use it but its one of those things if you don't have it you WILL need it

Re: PTO winch or Electric
Have had electric and now have a PTO. most of the time I am using it is to recover others to me (I do some casual recovery work), drag logs, and sometimes to get myself out.
The below are my observations
PTO
pros
Will go all day long or as long as there is fuel
Strong as strong
simple
less maintenance issues (this doesn't mean I don't do any)
Cons
You have to be in the drivers seat
Electric
pros
Can operate from out side of the vehicle
Cons
Hard on batteries
over heat
Need lots of good regular maintenance

Cheers for the help, sounds to me a PTO is the way to go

Re: PTO winch or Electric
I have a PTO on an FJ and another advantage is that you effectively have a 5-speed winch. If you are winching flat with little drag, you can be tugging at some serious speed. Also, you have a lot more power in a PTO, think of the power output of the motor vs. 5kw out of the electric.
Downside is as stated...if engine dies, you are stranded (not that your electric would last long.
If you are able to find a PTO, make sure you get the shaft drive bearing brackets. I had to custom fab some for mine.

Yea id go with a PTO if i had the choice. The main advantage for me with a Electric tho is if ya roll over, you can self recover.

Re: PTO winch or Electric
PTO winches are good but not bulletproof, other than not being able to stand your truck back up when you flop they can also be maintence prone with flogged out uni's, flogged out bearings in the pto shaft pillow blocks and worn out couplings onto the winch and the worst bit is the pissy little shear pins they put on the cruiser winches if your looking at one for FJ70 they are only a 4mm pin that like to keep busting, if you get the shear pin problem sorted you can overload them until the housing breaks or the bronze gear strips...... but good hard pulling winches if you know how to maintain them and how to use them
