2L-T questions - head gasket/injectors

Post by Ryanjury »

I tried to remove the glow plugs from my 2L-T the other night and one snapped off in there (probe bit not threaded portion), another 2 plugs look like they are missing the end of them, one looks like it has been missing a while the other looks like fresh damage so maybe happened when I remove it. The 2 that haven't snapped look like they have exploded.

I am going to try and get access to the precombustion chamber through the injector hole and see if I can vacuum the broken end piece out and then will try and remove the broken off portion from the other plug. Has anyone had any luck trying to do this? I am aware it might not work and I might have to remove the head.

Also a question regarding injectors, I am not sure how old the injectors are on my engine, is there any way to inspect or clean them or do they just need replacing? I have heard that replacing the injectors especially in the older 2L-T engines makes a huge difference to performance/economy..

Get your injectors reconditioned.
Rod does exchange so you get a set back quicker.

Head off time.
Probably done enough damage to pistons and bore as well. Might be looking at new motor or a full rebuild in all reality.

The hardened tips of the glow plugs embed themselves into the tops of the pistons and/or head. Can also damage valves.

The other glow plugs have dropped the tips off by what you said as well.
Not a good sign.
From lots of experience with these, I can tell you it will most likely be in need of a lot of coin thrown at it.
I'd be recommending removing the head to look at what damage has been done. Be prepared for the worst is all I'm saying.

Yeah you are right.. Thanks, I didn't think it was a good sign that the ends of the "intact" plugs looked like they had exploded and I wonder where the bits went.. I guess ill find out tomorrow.. :( Not excited, will update thread..

Well got the head off today and the pistons and valves look ok.. But the head has 1 small crack between the valves on one cylinder. Looks like a long expensive road to getting this one fixed!
