TD27 (R50) water pump

Post by hemi265 »

Starting to lose coolant occasionally. I have water stains running down the front of the sump. There is what appears to be a thin cover behind the crankshaft pulley, and it has some sort of a rubber dust seal around the bottom of this cover. It appears wet here.
I haven’t found a mirror and light yet to have a look up under the bottom of the water pump, but have what I found indicate a sure sign that the water pump seal has gone, or are there other things that can leak on the front of engine?

I haven’t slackened the belts yet, but I can’t get any movement of the water pump pulley (belts aren’t that tight) and there has been no odd noises. Do the seals fail by themselves or only if the bearings go?

If water pump, is rekitting an option, or where is the best place to purchase from?

Water pumps on these do fail. Get a mirror and check the weep hole under the pump. Most other common leaks are around the lower thermostat housing and this leaks down under the intake manifold.
They are non repairable and a pit pricey to replace as they come with the fan hub attached. Also there are a few variations on the pulley so you might need yours off to get the right one.

This one seems cheap… is it too cheap or will it be ok? Suppose to have one year warranty. Others seem to be around $300.
Mine has approx 2 mm clearance around the pulley edge to the housing. Is this the same as the no clearance one described?

Pretty sure your water pump is the 143mm fan hub.
I've bought two for around $120 both made in japan.
There are two holes on the water pump, and they leak with the seal has gone.

Also the sandwich plate can leak, mine did. Which involves taking lots off including timing cover.

Im not sure if yours has a cooling pipe for the turbo that comes from under the thermostat housing as this can also leak.

Was that $120 each, or did you get 2 for $120?
Who was the supplier?
doesn't seem to be leaking today while I have been looking. Maybe this suggests the seal, because all the other joints would leak consistently right?
I can't see drain hole under pump, maybe hidden by pulley which is close to housing on mine, however there does not appear to be any water stains around bottom of pump. Took the belts off pump and bearings are quiet and no play.
It's quite hard looking around in there with mirror.

Around $120 each. Im in Australia though.
Shouldnt be to hard to see where it is leaking.
Do you have green rust inhibiter in it? That stands out.
Hose it off and take it for a drive and look again .

no, I have an orange colored antifreeze, and I don’t think it is so obvious to see. I had big puddles on the ground yesterday, and it was wet at the sump, but today it is totally dry, now I have been looking with the bottom cover panel off.
I was thinking about the water pump. Mine being the one with pulley close to the housing, the drain hole would be under the pulley right?
If so then it would drip on the pulley first, run down the pulley and drip off this missing the water pump housing maybe?
The clean dry looking bottom of the water pump housing was making me think it isn’t the water pump, but maybe the coolant just drips past it. :?

It could be dribbling down the housing and not touching the pulley.
Mine did that.
It was the same pump as yours by the sound.
Cost was $212+ trade price from BNT.
There are 2 types listed for the R50 TD27, alloy or cast body. The alloy has the pulleys very close to the w/p body.
Part numbers are N65AF (cast body long snout) and N80 (alloy body and 2mm approx clearance).
Hope that helps.

Thanks Dan, Travis and mudbugga. I still have not confirmed the leak yet. Just found a better mirror to look with, but now it does not want to leak, so maybe this confirms it definitely is the pump! This morning, i put some pressure into the system, and got coolant running out the cover below the crankshaft pulley, but didnt have the right mirror to see water pump with.

Nothing else will leak there intermitently, will it?

I was going to order the cheap pump as linked in 3 rd post. Mine is alloy housing, and i thought it looked like the N47AF one, but now maybe it could be a N 80??? Maybe i just have to go without a vehicle and pull it out and then order to get it right!

Finally have confirmed water pump! Just couldn’t see it with light and mirror. There was no tell tale stain either. Worked it out by pushing a tissue in between the pulley and housing.
Now just have to order the right water pump. Is anyone able to confirm whether the N27AF one in link in post 3 is one that will fit, or is it a N80 I need.
Mine is a alloy housing with approx 2 mm gap between housing and pulley.
It has W23 stamped into the housing near top.
I’ve asked the seller , but have not had a reply. :D

I've just based it on how far apart the fan blade bolts are.

Thanks Travis. I got a reply back from the trader and he says he isn’t certain that the pump will fit. It’s a cheap pump anyway, so I can’t be certain of its quality. I think it is highly likely that I will end up having to send it back, and all the messing around involved, so I’m thinking that I may just take the punt on a second hand one.
A local wrecker says they have one for $50 that feels pretty good, so might just give that a try. If it don’t leak straight away, it may last a while.
I don’t have contacts for trade discount, and just don’t have the $300 or so around at the moment… Thanks for the help

I wouldn't buy a second hand one, you don't know how old they are, and the seals can fail at any time. Especially when you change the coolant, Because all the crap in your cooling system keeps the seals from leaking.
They can't be too hard to find? Do you have a supercheap auto? In AU they can order them for around $150.
I'm not sure where to source them in NZ.
This is only what i can find

Thank you. I hear what you are saying with the second hand one. I didn’t want to go down that track.
Attachment picture is different to mine. Didn’t find my one on the Butlers website, but the China one may be the right one.
I’ll try to get a fan bolt hole spacing from the new one I’m looking at. At least I can return this one if it isn’t right.

Still trying sort sort a cost effective option, short of importing from overseas.

I found a suitable cheap pump with the wrong viscous fan hub on it. (135mm fan bolt spacing instead of nearly 145mm) Maybe I can change hub over.
Just wondering how the viscious hub is held on. Is it a press fit, screwed on, or other.
The other option is to try and find a fan to suit this new pump. If this is an option what vehicles has a suitable fan for the smaller hub?

The other option is to make the centre of old fan fit the 135mm bolt spacing. Any clever ideas here?

If i do order from overseas, how can i be sure that i will get the right one. When i tried to purchase at local shops, it was quite a mission, basically having open boxes to check which one. Retail prices around $400 sucks...

Cannot change fan hub as the are pressed on.
The fan to fit 135mm is smaller.
Best to get the 145mm

All sorted now. I used that Chinese link, and got a really helpful lady on the other end, that spent the time to find the right one for me, so I’m going with that. Will be about $140 NZ at my place.
Feel bad for not supporting local business, but Repco was $391, super cheap was $388, so what else do you do!
Thanks for the help, as I know now without the advice given, I would have ended up with the wrong pump / viscous hub.

Don't blame you, not that repco or supercheap are local businesses, there owned by Americans and Australians.
