Competition Winch Tech
Re: Competition Winch Tech
When i set my rear mount up, i was advised to use a minimum 4:1ratio to get the rope to layer evenly. 4x the width of the drum to the first guide.

Nice thanks! Guess I need to figure out how to get some more length...

Re: Competition Winch Tech
Has anyone got pics of what they use to keep the rope layering correctly ,
Also I have a fast winch and it sometimes gets wraped the wrong way a few turns has anyone got a magical setup or things they do to get around these things on high speed winches ,
Its just a toy truck but if there isn't much available I may get inventing !!

So we need to create a giant version of a fishing real spool?

Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

in principle yes but practically it would be a nightmare as ALL the strength would have to be in the guide that layers the rope.. I can only see this failing badly.. For laying the rope on as Madaz has said.. a good distance from the fairlead to drum is best.. but again not feasible for a front mount winch as space is a premium..

Re: Competition Winch Tech
Helicopter rescue winches (hoists) use a grunted up version of the fishing reel mechanism. Well the ones we fitted to the Iroquois' at work did.
I doubt they would handle the dirt and muck very well though, nor the potentially high side loadings...
I have been thinking similar things since I managed the get 50 metres of 12mm rope on my winch drum (front mounted). As soon as it gets used in anger and does not lay itself nicely on the drum it is going to bind up. So easy fix will likely be take about 10 metres off and splice it up to use as a winch extension when needed...

Ive had a think about this too. I looked at cranes and industrial winches but most of what I found run the layering mechanism off the drum... difficult on electric recovery winches. Yea I cant see anything coping with the mud and big side loads.
So it looks like the only effective way is to have alot of distance between the drum and the fairlead or first pulley.
For those running rear or mid mounted winches with the rope going through the chassis/ body to the front of the truck how do you stop the rope bird nesting or bunching when you are freespooling or if when winching the rope goes slack? Do you have to have easy access to the winch or can you bury it in the back or under the body?

I never had a problem with this. Certainly a slightly sticky freespool stops it from over running when you pull rope out. As far as going slack and tight while winching/driving, the tiny bit of friction in my under truck guides meant that any slack rope was on the ground in front of the truck, not under it.

Mine was super easy to access at the back of my truck, however, I never really needed this feature. So long as you can get a fair amount of practice/trail before a comp, such that you know your setup is reliable, then I don't really see a problem with burying it. Obviously, easy access is always better.

Some of the seasoned winch campaigners may shed a bit more light on the matter, but I got this memory of Klem building the hilux winch truck with the pto in the back and I am sure that clever chap Mike devised a fishing reel style system to layer the rope on ???
Damn certain I recall holding the deck lid open to watch it spool awesome

Maybe at one stage, but not that I have ever seen. Klem runs a pretty simple (but well refined) setup. It's just a rear mount pto. It has a few breadboards that rub on the ears of the drum and serve to help it not over-run when you free spool it (he has a real nice free spool), and they help to guide the rope if it is being wound on from very loose.
Is Klem still alive? Maybe if we give him enough shit his ears might burn and he will remember how fun winch challenges are? No Taupo 1000 this year, no excuses Klem.

But where are the winch challenge events?
(apart from the South Island ones)
Not much around these days.

overheard somebody talking at Kiwi the other week about how awesome the Winch Challenge was he ran in Taupo
Lets burn his ears good and proper

Nope. With a mid mounted winch there's really no need for anything like that, have a good length of rope to the 1st eye & it'll spool on fine. Having some friction on the drum is important to stop overspooling, especially when you have a big drum with a bit of flywheel effect.
I did hear a rumour that the idea of a 1 day winch challenge in the Taupo area may be being considered.

Make it happen Clint. Also is that beast of yours done yet? It must be one day challenge worthy now!
