LD28 to TD42

Post by turbosaf »

Anyone know if this is possible. I have a spare td42 and saw this on trademe. Thought it would be a cool conversion...

TD42 will be to long for the 4 cyl Hilux engine bay,you could make it fit but would be a big job.

Too heavy as well. There's a reason why you don't see many(any) of these conversions. Same goes for fitting a 4.2 Cruiser engine into a Hilux - They are just too big.

Yep , you will need to chop the firewall, a RB30 only just fits and that's with the radiator directly under the front brace and bonnet pins to the side in place of the bonnet latch.

would have been a squeeze to get the ld28 in and only a 2.8 ?? all that work and cost to end up with the same sized motor

It was a trend in the 90's to re-power everything petrol with an LD28, I have even seen one in a hiace van.
To be fair it would probably be an ok conversion and those motors do big milage.

Oh is ld28 shorter than the td42? Thought with the modifications already done to fit ld28 it wouldbe reasonably simple?

The LD28 Block comes from the same casting family as the RB 20,24,25,and 30.

The main difference between all theses blocks is the deck height and stroke

A popular mod is to bolt the later twin cam petrol head to the bigger blocks or use the LD28 crank interchange rods etc to create odd capacities.

Yeah it was a crazy time. Much to the dismay of Max at Hoskins Land Rover, we put one in the Series 3 Rover.

Almost got stranded in a soft section of the Waiau River shortly after the conversion, my friend Paul remarked, 'its like the engine just picked up the Landie and threw it out of the river'

We pulled it out of a Bedford. Prior to that it had been in some General Motors Buick/Pontiac parts bin thing (something called a Holden Commodore??!). An Australian car. Well, an Australian car in the same sense that an Opel is a German car.

But I digress

nissan did put the RB30 in the patrol though, the hard bit is finding the bellhousing that mates the 30 to the patrol gearbox.

That would have used the same gearbox as an Rd28 powered one
