Need help repairing Land Rover alloy panel - ChCh

Post by lax2wlg »

I am wondering if there is anybody who is skilled in repairing aluminium panels who could look at this. This particular panel is from an early 1980s 109 V8. Located in ChCh.

There were always a few ripples on it (not the end of the world), but as can be seen, the latch was left open and it flew up and deformed itself. It has screwed up the close line and looks awful.

So I am wondering if anyone qualified can tell me - is this repairable? I realise the whole thing will need to be stripped and repainted.

If not I will need to find another 90/110/109 V8 bonnet, but thought I would try this first as they seem to be very rare.

Thanks for any non-moronic suggestions from qualified parties

can't tell you if it is fixable or not, but i will say- get the part pushed out where that main crease is. Otherwise the bonnet flexes, and(over time) the alloy will crack right on the crease. Happened to me on my 110.
All the best.

Almost any panel is repairable, given enough time, patience and the right equipment. In a previous life I made panels like this from a flat sheet so repairing this is possible, however, unless you can find a skilled person, with the right equipment and wanting to do it at a very low hourly rate, it would be much cheaper and easier to buy a replacement.

I'm starting to think I need to find another bonnet.

Classic and muscle restorations in Christchurch could fix that.

I like to have a go at things and if it was mine  , I would clear the garage floor (and a week latter) lay down a piece of old carpet, put bonnet shinny side down on carpet place bonnet under one of the roof trusses and then with your bottle jack and suitable lengths of timber and packing proceed to massage bonnet back to it's former glory. A bit at a time and don't over stretch it. Use a round bit of timber for the curves, give it a go

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE,

I'm with Fitzy. Give it a crack. I would imagine that you wouldn't want to hit with anything made of steel as it will stretch etc, but why not have a go massaging it back into shape?
