Two intercoolers?

Post by Disco Gofer »

Ok , trying not to sound dumb BUT can one fit a second intercooler to a diesel instead of one larger one due to the lack of space? Would an additional top bonnet mount one make a difference if fitted in conjunction with "tweeking" the pump?

Probably better off upgrading original, as I would imagine the pipework would end up looking a bit spastic. What vehicle are we talking, one would assume a discovery due to username but pays to be sure. Can get a more efficient intercooler without changing size just higher flow tubes etc.

it will work fine, providing that the cores are not restrictive, but as pointed out, it can complicate the system. Ducting is important, otherwise a top mount can become an "interWARMER", because hot air rises from the motor. If this happened, it would negate any benefit from having the extra core volume.

if you have room to fit another IC in you should have room to replace it with a bigger IC.
one issue with dual IC, if both are top mount you could end up with them competing against each other for air flow. ie one blowing down could force air back up the other turning intercooler into interheater.
pipe work will be a pain, extra volume from the pipes/end tanks and it can mean double the restriction unless in parallel.

a ton of work for little gain if any.

Would an air/water system be more space friendly?

Front mount the lil rad and then top mount the air cooler. Just some water lines to run from the radiator.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. Factory one is next to the water radiator sharing the same cowling as the fan. The Discovery has a double deep mod option from the UK but it's close to $700. So one is front mounted now as standard and the second was going to be a top mount Pajero one with a fan and cowling mounted to it already. I know the gain will be small but just trying to get a little more safe power out of this old 200TDi cause it such a cool truck to drive.

i wouldn't bother fitting a top mount in line with the front mount. at best it will do nothing, most likely it will go worse especially when going slow as the top mount turns into an interheater.
once the air has been cooled down the last thing you want to do is cause any more turbulence and another IC is the worse possible thing for turbulence.
also you would be wasting power with the air speed changes as it goes from IC to pipe.

i would work out how well the factory one is working, if there is room for improvement replace it with a better one.

There are upgraded intercoolers available ex UK to fit the Discovery that will provide the additional benefits you are seeking.
Either a direct replacement to existing or a larger unit that will fit in front of the radiator.
Either way you do need to shorten your pockets or get longer arms.
Anything you want to do will cost. Trying to save money will not get the desired benefits.

Bit like wasting money on second hand shocks and finding them stuffed.

Ouch Ralfie......point taken. The Shocks were a freebe with the springs I bought so had nothing to loose as they were 50mm longer to suite. Just cringe when I see the level of mark of products sold locally compared to overseas excl. freight. I have found a supplier that has the 90mm deep ones to go in the original place for 125 pounds so thats not too bad and am going with that to do it right.
