After yesterdays flooding and getting water over the bonnet of my work R50 I think it might be wise for the boss to get me a snorkel.
I have seen on one aussie company making them but some people complain about fitting them as they require cutting some of the inner guard structure. The other option I have seen is modifying a D22 navara one.
Has anyone here fitted one to an R50 or have any advice on this. Also price is an issue as my boss is really tight.
I can get a D22 one for $300

Probably but I would like to hear from someone who has done it. Not just a couple of people doing it on the internet.

well then you need to be clear...you want to hear from some one that has brought a full kit for the R50 and installed it or brought a full kit for a D22 navara, modified it to fit an R50 and installed it?
One thing i can tell you is that the D22 kit enters the engine bay just in front of the side indicator where as the R50 enters about 200mm from the front tip of the gaurd.
Then there are two different air cleaners used in the R50 a flat panel filter and a verticaly mounted drum and volume chamber style set up depending on the year of production.
IF your set on the D22 snorkel you will most likely be using a hole saw to cut through the inner guard, as the D22 air cleaner is more like the R20 in that it is a horizontally mounted drum filter.

Re: R50 snorkel
Thanks Crash. The only report I found of an install using a D22 kit was on an aussie site and it was on a facelift version and the snorkel in question was a factory fitted D22 one. The only pic of it was from a long way off and it extended down the guard about half way, Oh and the report was 7 years old.
I looked on Gibson Airflows site as they are the only ones I can find making an R50 snorkel and down loaded the fitting instructions. They connect into the air intake under the front guard not in the engine bay so it shouldn't matter what configuration is under the bonnet. Their D22 kit is as you say and goes through the guard in front of the indicator. I have seen on trademe a seller that has 2 D22 options and both look more like the factory one that extend along the guard further.
It would be awesome if someone on here has fitted a snorkel to an R50 but it appears that doing it is rather rare as these things dont really get used for off roading that much.
I am more interested in how the d22 fits on the guard aesthetically the under guard piping is not a problem.

Re: R50 snorkel
Apparently a Ford Courier snorkel fits the R50.
Air box needs modifying though to make it fit.

Re: R50 snorkel
Well the D22 snorkel worked.
It needed to be warmed up and tweaked a little to get a snug fit onto the guard and there is bugger all room under the guard so the piping is really tight, I had to take the guard off to get the pipe onto the snorkel once it was bolted to the guard. It will require a custom A pillar bracket and I still need a 90 degree bend to finish the engine bay plumbing.
This is the kit I used

Re: R50 snorkel
Pics, All I had to get extra was the 90 degree joiner for in the engine bay, blue was all they had at ripco this morning. Now I want to try and heat it up and bend it slightly towards the a pillar at the top and out a fraction to make the bracket easier to make. I will also put an aerial on the a pillar bracket.

Nice job
