Wanted: 5spd Gearbox for a 1992 Terrano
Wanted: 5spd Gearbox for a 1992 Terrano
Does anyone have a gearbox that will fit a TD27 5spd 92 Terrano? Just replaced clutch and now gear box has gone. Close to Dunedin would be awesome. Cheers
Re: Wanted: 5spd Gearbox for a 1992 Terrano
They are a common failure point, another secondhand box may have similar problems within a short period of time. Best option, find a gearbox out of a QD32 powered Navara I think it is as they are much stronger and shouldn't let go again in a hurry. Next best option get a rebuilt TD27 gearbox or rebuild your own.

Sweet thanks for the info..might have a look around for a Navara box and if that doesn't work then I might just cut my losses. Any idea what it would cost(approx) to rebuild with nearly all gears and thrust bearing?

Wax, Slide, Sibainmud and myself have done the swap.
Ideally what you are looking for is the manual box out of a TD27T powered caR50. I paid $750 for mine. Here is a thread with some detailed technical info on the swap.

The 4-cylinder models (ie yours) are equipped from the factory with the smaller FS5W71C gearbox. Relative to the power output there is actually nothing inherently wrong with it.
There are 2 reasons it fails prematurely
-oil starvation due to insufficient capacity. Nissan released an official service bulletin which acknowledges this.
-People use GL5 oil instead of period-specific GL4 which eats the soft metals inside it.
I have had two of these transmissions now, both with over 200k on them. One was purchased second hand and installed with the proper amount of oil. I just Used 5.1L (instead of 3.6L as the manual states) of GL-4 with zero issues and clocked up 50,000kms between the two.

This is the larger FS5R30A box which is the little brother to the Y60 Safari box. The transfer chain is also substantially larger. The V6 WD21 models are equipped from the factory with this gearbox. Unfortunately however you can't bolt one from a V6 Terrano onto a TD27.
Theres another guy around here who recently put a QD32 box in. I think Slide and Crash Bandicoot were helping him out with getting it to all fit and work properly. Maybe one of them will chime in next.
In any event its an awesome upgrade and I would highly recommend it. Theres a bit of a weight penalty but is a gross overkill for the power output and barely notices the little TD27. This gives it ultimate dependability and therefore (IMO) it makes sense in a heavy duty application.

You are looking for any of the following car/engine combination in 5 speed manual
An R31 R/S skyline or sedan with RB30e or e/t
R32 skyline GTs-4 with RB20det or an RB25de or RB26de
rb26dett GTR
A31 Rb25de or RB20det cefiro
C32/33 Laurel with RB25de/t
R33 GTs-T/GTs-4 RB25det
R34 GTT/GTR
RB30 /RD28 patrol
1996 onwards R50 terrano/pathfinder 2.7 eti
nissan 180/240sx or S14/15 silvia spec-S SR20det
you do not want any equipped with a v6 as above, these gearboxes had there bell housing cast with the front half of the gearbox.
examples of this are pre 95 terrano/pathfinder and 300zx
you will also need to acquire the brake and clutch pedal boxes master cylinder sandwich plate flywheel and spigot bearing slave cylinder drive shafts(depends what model you get the box from) cross member /mount etc
these gearboxes share the internals with that of the Patrol/safari
