i went from (in my Phaatsun) trans out to radiator-radiator to cooler-then cooler back to trans. idea is that the radiator will be hot with water so having it go thru the cooler after its been thru the radiator is gonna keep it cooler  ....

did that make sence ? :?

Interesting, my 1KZ didn't have a trans cooler... have just installed one due to the extra HP from the 2jz..

Is yours a manual box, the autos have a cooler in the bottom of the radiator.

Mines an A343F Auto. Nothing in the Rad though. I've seen the surf rads that have the cooler at the bottom, mines different.

Mines a Jap import though, main cooling system is different as their summers aren't as hot. So that could be why. Never had an overheated trans though, even towing a caravan with seized brakes

Hi Kev, my son has had an extra trans cooler fitted to his 97 Surf by an Auto shop in Nelson. They fitted it in the outlet line from the trans, through the extra cooler then into the bottom of the radiator cooler, so it is plumbed into the line from trans out to radiator, hope this makes sence.

IT'S LATE ---- OR IS IT EARLY ???,

FITZY.

Trans Cooler

Post by sarmajor »

The general theory is that you install them in the line from the trans to the radiator cooler. This ensures that the fluid goes back to the trans at a reasonably constant temperature.
The cooler before the radiator removes heat before the fluid goes into the radiator making life easier for the radiator and engine as well.
If you put the cooler in the line from the radiator to the trans then on really cold days the trans gets cold fluid and that is bad.

I was told by the local auto shop to bypass the rad cooler alltogether as they have small pipes and can block up with the debris carried in the oil.
