looking for a LSD for front of Patrol/Safari

Post by Terry »

Hi All,
been lurking for a bit, finally need to burst into print. I've been dithering over the front diff of my Patrol (Air, Auto, LSD, no) locker (89 GQ). The money for an air locker has evaporated and now that I've bent the housing I need to do something fairly soon. Does anyone have any experience of dropping a Navarra/Terrano LSD into the front (I've seen a few, but...). I'm assuming if you get the right model you just move the ring and pinion over and pop it in?
Also, anyone got a Navarra / Terrano rear LSD for sale (H233B, 31-spline) or know where I might get one? If I can't find one I'll go a lokka, just want to see how this works (I'm happy with the rear LSD). And, just to keep the questions flowing - I'm going to reinforce the replacement housing - anyone done it / got pics? I'm thinking 100x100x8mm Angle welded to the front along the arms and fitted to the curve of the pumpkin bit. Any help/suggestions/abuse would be helpful...

Im looking into the LSD option aswell just to give it a go, update us on what you think once it is done.

As far as gusseting goes all you need to gusset is there the housing necks down to that ball joint, i just welded a peice of 10mm plate top and bottom on mine. Some winch truck guys also gusset from the top of the pumpkin out to the passenger side spring mount to take the abuse they put it through but if its for a club truck there isnt really a need to do so.

I have been told that the rear diff head from a d21 Terrano v6 -it must be v6- with 31 spline will fit, and if the ratio is incorrect you can use the carrier to fit to your front diff.

Hi,

finally got the LSd into the diff, ran out of time so got a mechanic to swap the ring and pinion over, then dropped the new head in just fine. Welded some braces to the swivels and some impact protection to the pumpkin while I was at it - took longer than all the rest of the work put together. Tested it out on the driveway, couldn't unlock the hubs afterward. Bought some manuals on TradeMe the next day, problem solved. I'll keep the auto/manual ones as spares.

Went on a CCVC trip into the Akas last week - nice long run, did the Ruts, slippery forest, a few other bits I don't know the names of. Made the ruts both ways (missed the big holes at each end, we were in a hurry), had to be stropped once in the slippery forest - so did everyone else except the trip leader and Marcel's v8 suzuki thing. Much, much better results than last time - you could feel the extra drive in the deep mud, and could crawl up out of ledges that needed heaps of momentum before (that's how I bent my old diff in the first place!). So far I'm stoked - yet to see what it's like on sand, or sidlings (I suspect that'll be the real test). Doesn't seem to handle any worse than before (its LWB so always has been reluctant to turn). I'll update again if I find anything negative, but for now it's all good...
