silent shaft?

Post by pajeroboy »

hey all, just had to do my waterpump on my 91 pajero, noticed when i removed the timing belt cover that there is a second belt system in there, after doing some homework and digging round to find out what it is i found that it the silent shaft belt.

heres the question what does the silent shaft do? and what would happen if it wasnt there? because the belt was broken.

any help would be nice

I suspect it will be the balancer shaft and a 2.5 turbo Diesel. I don't know what they run like without one - ie how smooth but if it has broken and not done any damage - wow! I have just got one and the cam belt picked it up and broke the rocker gear.....

I'd replace it or at least remove the broken belt if you haven't already.....

I killed the top end on my motor when the balancer/silenticer shaft cam belt broke I was at full revs doing a soft shingle crossing  ....I'm guessing it put it out of balance enough that the cam belt slipped a couple of teeth bottoming out 2 valves which shattered the rocker arms and just on feel bent two other valves..... I decided to bin the motor ... its the white wanker in my avitar

Be carefull if you decide to run it with out

Oh and I did a bit of asking round as mine was 40k into a new cam belt... seems some of the car yards will do the cam belt to help sales.... problem is they do only the cam belt  if I had enough prof I'd name them, but either way I'll never buy from them

My wifes truck is due for the cam belt in about 10K or so, and I am planning on doing both belts (cam and balance), have to take most of the crap off the front to get to the cam belt so may as well do both and save any probs later on :)

To undo the bolt - got a really long bar and held onto it then got someone to give the starter a quick flick... worked a treat.

Then the pully without pully pullers... - got 2 long bolts with the same thread as the holes in the middle of the main pully that the other pully bolts to and threaded them in half a turn at a time, the pully came off nice and gently. 8)
