Hi all., ive been sorting some loose ends with my truck lately and true to my own form gone the long way about it, Ive had a issue with morning starts with winter here, and the snow and frost are making starting scary in the morning. i fitted a non return valve in the fuel line as i thought that i was getting an air bubble due to a leaking fuel pump seal, that fixed the stalling, but not the 20 second crank time, i had a blown 80a fuse before the glow plug relay so fixed that and i now have power to that, but nothing coming out so i guess its poked? i pulled a plug and couldnt make that glow across the battery so theyre done too, why would the whole system be screwed like that?

glows get used a lot and wear out. trouble is you don't notice they have died until it gets cold.
common problem is not fitting the glow plug connecting bar insulators the right way and the lead shorts out blowing the fuse.

ok can you elaborate on that? im gonna put in a new relay next week so would like to make sure its all fine first.

just worked out that on top of this i need to do the front injector seal.

ended up getting some hkt plugs from thailand on ebay
7 dollars each, holy shit thats a good price,
now i just need the relay, repco and bnt were no help. where can i find that?

You guess relays poked so waste money and time trying another?
Have you even tested it?
Why not save time and money and get real answers by going visiting a mechanic?

Yup ive tested it and its dead. Ive replaced the fuseable link which was blowen and it has power to it but it doesnt work. The timer works as I have tested that also. So it can only be the relay. It doesnt even click. Ps I tested it with an auto sparky.

most of my boogied trucks have just run a starter solenoid on a button to activate the plugs, works quite well and cheap enough
problems are only a problem if you not willing to learn how to find solutions

I could be waaay off base here so don't shoot me but I had a company vehicle once that had glowplug issues, and the heater circuit was bypassed by a mechanic. He wired 12 volts onto the plugs, but it wasn't meant to have 12 volts, like 6 volts or something instead. needless to say I burnt those little baskets out real fast
Come to think of it, I never liked that vehicle - it ended up costing me my job after I ran it out of oil!

correct a lot of them are like that. most engines since the 80's are double voltage systems.
i think the engine he has is 12v or 10v glows. so they handle moderate length of time. the 7v ones typically are only on 12v for a few seconds before switching over to low voltage. those you will burn out really fast.

Correct, the voltage is a rough guide to how long they take to glow as well.
A 7v plug will take about 7 seconds to glow and an 11v plug will take about 11 seconds.
Most systems have glow and after glow, they get 12v for the initial glow to heat them up then go to after glow which is usually about 6v to keep them hot till the engine warms up. Some Nissan's and Toyota's use a manifold heater as the resistor to drop the voltage others just use a big resistor. Mazda WL-T engines just keep the plugs powered with 12v and they eat plugs.
The lower voltage plugs are common as the initial glow is much quicker and some people dont want to wait 10 seconds for the light to go out.

Check your fuel filter as well the seal and the 2 seals at the bottom (the water thingy unit and the wee drain tap may not be sealing, if you pump your fuel filter is it dripping or not sealing?, these can be sealed with seal grease

That would make sence. If air was getting in there and then being pulled in to the pump it would air lock it temporarily causing the sputter and stall im getting about 30 seconds after startup?
I have a non return valve on the engine side of the filter and the problem remains so I guess that all makes sence....
