long slow gq project

Post by y60 safari driver »

hi all, though I would start a thread on the wagon mods to motivate me to actually do them

Already done is re built pto winch (bearings were rusted solid when I bought it)
replaced all seals and bearings in front axle and fitted front locker.

I was a Mechanic until the start of this year (holden dealership) and have just started an engineering apprentiship so mods are mostly to practise skills as I learn them (hence the long slow part)

first up on the to do list is build a manifold for the turbo I just picked up and plumb all that up.
also want to remove the 2" body lift in it to sit it back to standard and cut guards instead.
would like to swap the land cruiser shocks from the front for normal 2" lift ones.
lots of other bits and pieces but they are the main ones.

would love to build it up like it was from toms offroad but won't be anything that extreme

anyway any tips or ideas welcome. cheers all

Why change the cruiser shocks out?have them in mine and found it lets the front flex better. I have no body lift but have drilled a 65mm hole in guard for the shock instead.

mostly because it's a pain for a warrant having modified shock mounts and no cert

if your going to turbo it you will need a cert anyway so may as well leave the shocks as is.

It would seem i should of titled this extremely long slow gq project but anyway, quiet at work today so got to do some welding :) also just had rockers refaced, fitted the 35's and scored a td27t injector pump to steal bits off of. Finally making some progress

went to set the tappets today after the reface but didn't have a tool to turn it over on the crank so now next weekends job. instead pulled the old sagged guard rubbers off to check guard clearances, thinking they will need some trimming, what have other people done with that plastic part on the rear guards as i'll need to put flares on to cover tyres still but if i cut it i'll lose the flat to screw to. pulled the rear step and bumper ends off to get ready for rear quarter chop. has anyone lifted the fuel tank in one of these before? i have a two inch body lift so have a bit of space to lift it just wondering how others have gone about it. Towbar to come off and will build a rear bar up

got the tappets back in and set on saturday. fired it up and still got the noise i'm chasing, might be time to go in for a compression test and leak test. otherwise still on the go, picked up intercooler that i can top mount off to the right of the motor so hopefully a bit less heat soaking. now to strip the turbo and fit the rebuild kit (fingers crossed no damaged fans). also picked up a new mirror to replace LH wing mirror that has never had glass in it while i've owned it :D

I found with trimming guards 35mm front and rear fitted 37s easily no body lift but had 4" lwb spring lift in a swb so you have 2"body and 2" spring 35s should clear as for the plastic bits cut em and make 5 or 6 90 deg brackets to hold flares in place

I found the bend on the compressor housing a real pia when it came to hooking up the intake from the air box. Ended up just cutting it off and welding a bit of Ali pipe on then ground the inside out to thin the pipe wall.
then with a bit of heat and a big bar I rolled it to a bit of a bell mouth so it fitted the 3inch intake pipe. Also started to build boost bout 100rpm earlier.
Good thing about those turbos is both housings are easy to rotate to get things to line up. Esp to get oil inlet at the top

yeah, been umming and ahhing about that bend, will see if i can get away with it but if not i was thinking along those lines. if i rotate it do i have to notch the housing to sit over the locating pin or will the pin come out? couldn't pull it out when i had it apart

I just pulled the pin out. Did have to mod the actuator mounting but is pretty easy to do.
Unless you ve got the air box behind the left battery I really recommend cutting the bend off , makes things soooo much easier. And way less bends in the system

had a few spare mins today so managed to get a bit further with the exhaust manifold. owes me $130. still need to smooth out the welds around the inlet ports but came up quite nice. was going to get a bit more carried away with the collector but decided the gain wouldn't be enough to warrant it plus the port ended up quite a good size and has a kicker in the middle at the bottom forcing gas up towards it any way. next up is a dump pipe.

chopped the front guards up this weekend. Had the same issue i have when trimming a tree, start cutting and before you know it there is a lot more gone than you planned :? . Oh well plenty of room now  welded a strip along the guard at 90 degrees to screw flares in to. got to attack the rear quarters and little bit off the rear guards now, shouldn't be a drama. starting to take shape now though.

been chipping away at it, got the guards trimmed up,
front guards (800x600).jpg

did some testing before fitting the turbo and found it was way down on compression in one cylinder and the others were below min spec so decided i might as well give it a freshen up. also changing up the suspension to 3'' flexi springs all round and 4'' amada shocks cheers to trundles automotive.

Stripped down to a bare block, found some big bits of metal in the sump now to track down where they have come from. One bit was cylinder twos piston skirt oil squirter. not sure what has caused that to break off. Let the investigation begin.
