Hi All,
In my continuing quest for a new truck I had a colleage look at a 96 Prado with 350,000k's on.
He found a couple of issues that I was expecting - oil leak around the buttefly in the intake, oil black and needing a service.
He also reported a loud top end rattle once warmed up. He explained it like a tappet noise but loud.
Do these motors run hyd or manual tappets? If hyd could a good oil change and flush help?
Or is it an injector noise??
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Matt

Re: 1KZ-TE top end rattle
They run hydraulic lifters with buckets and shims. The oil leaks around the butterfly are most likely egr with a bit of pcv oil. Get rid of both and clean the manifold and intercooler properly and you will be surprised at how much difference it makes.
IFS all the way...go the mark 1 Pajero!
Re: 1KZ-TE top end rattle
Don't know about the tapping but that oil leak is pretty common. Its oil from the pcv or turbo going through the intercooler and leaking out the rubber joiner above the butterfly. I think the clamps toyota used are not tight enough and allow oil to leak out the join.
