sj413 diff locking

Post by Rocko »

thinking of locking my rear diff in my 413 off road only, have been told you can put extra "shims" in diff can anyone elaborate on this?? OR do I just weld it up? as I have a spear recon diff head anyway??

If you do it this way (only 2 of the gears) you can reverse it by replacing them. I don't know how it would go with there being a bit of movement in there though.

Never heard of the shims thing?

Personally, I'd weld the crap out of it, especially if you have a spare diff head

If you have a spare then I would also say weld it, see if you like it. Some people do, some don't.

thanks for link Sausager, can you not weld spider gears together without disassembly?

I suspect that welding the spider and side gears together would be stronger as doing it the way the link says could end up loading only one tooth and cause it to fail sending broken bits into the ring and pinion.

I probably woul take it apart so I could get a good weld on the side gears, but thats just me. If you take the ring gear off loctite and a torque wrench is the specified way of putting it back on.

If I was going to do it, I'd do it like this so that you don't need to disassemble it. I was thinking that you may have wanted to weld the two rings only in case you ever wanted to revert it back. But I guess that's why you have a spare diff head!

I'd leave it assembled and just go mad in there, personally.

had a look at spare diff head looks like not enough room to weld assembled

It won't whine but the inside wheel will 'skip' going round corners as it will be turning the same speed as the outside wheel but covering less distance.
