We are going up with some work folk this weekend and I would like to hire some handheld radios to communicate with the trucks that have 5w onboard radios. The place I am going to hire them from has asked me the frequency so they can program them I am a total noob at this and have no idea. Can someone shed some light on what I need to tell the hire company.
UHF - 477mhz is the frequency you want - as already said, channel 16 for recovery at woodhill.
Not sure what they cost to hire - but dick smiths/repco/supercheap sometimes have the handheld units of special for a decent price.

$30 each for Hire for the weekend. I have a uniden prs to go in my truck this week, so we will have at least 1 5w device.

Go buy a set of handhelds, cost you around $100 and then you own them.
I've got one of these (also threads on them here), a zares 4.7W handheld. Great range and awesome battery life. You can actually reprogram them to be an 80ch unit but shh....
I just got one of these, took all of 30 minz to install while I was stopping on and off txting and facebooking, just picked the power up from behind the ciggy lighter with some splicing crimp thingies.
Yeah I got the similar uniden to the GME one. Just installed it with out the antenna, taking a feed from the ciggie lighter, but it doesn't turn on. I assume it's like some car stereo's and needs the antenna installed to work? Im not to keen to pull my wiring apart until I get an antenna. The ciggy lighter works, so assumption says its the lack of antenna. It should turn up tomorrow for me to test.

Now I'm no expert but I vaguely remember being warned to never try and transmit with any kind of radio with no antenna attached. It can damage the RF amplifier. This may be why your unit won't turn on with no load (antenna) connected.

Yeah, the puddles were pretty gnarly. Some of the tracks are pretty rutted, but its was pretty good. I wish I had a snorkel, would have made some of the puddles a little less intimidating.
Keen to go up with some of the guys doing recovery some time soon. The group I was with were a little gung ho for my liking.

You're correct. In the last 20 years of it's life it has never been offroad. The old man had to once engage 4wd to get it out of a muddy grassy section.
But now I own it, it should be off road at least once a month.

bit of a late reply, but I know about the holes because I got stuck in one and flooded my truck had water up to the bottom of my steering wheel,no photos as my phone was under water still drove home so not all bad
