Molesworth Station

Post by Jameshunt244 »

Thought il'd do a wee write up on our trip through Molesworth station early this year.

We set of from Hanmer on New Year's Day, not sure on how far it was to the next gas station we filled up an extra 20L jerry can of fuel. Off we set a Land cruiser with a canoe on its roof, a flat deck hilux and my little liteace van. We took our time cruising up the Molesworth, trying to make it as interesting as possible by skipping bridges. Despite all the rain it was still easy to cross all the fords, even in my little van. Typical cruising for me, no one really looked at the map and wasn't sure exactly where we came out. Turns out it's Seddon. A quick stop in Blenheim for some more food and batteries and we set off towards St Anaud to find some where to camp for a couple days. We found a great DOC campsite on the main road. After spending some time/days up on lake rotoiti and in the wairua river we decided it was time to find a new fishing spot. We filled up with gas in St Anaud, which was a bad idea, small town gas prices are high. Next time I would recommend re fueling in Blenheim. The rainbow road was stunning. So nice to be enjoying that scenery from the comfort of a vehicle and not getting blisters on my toes. I would personally prefer a more challenging drive but it was still well worth the effort. Once we got to the top we found the gold in the form of a mountain tarn. Lake Sedgemere feed us 3 brown trout. A good way to finish of a good trip.

Quite a possibility we past you at some stage there.
We had 5 vehicles, Two Yellow Toyota FJ's, a Silver Land Rover Discovery, Green Jeep and Silver Nissan ute. We were on a farm midway between Blenheim and Hanmer New Years Eve on Molesworth side, then to Hamner, then up through Rainbow Road. It was pissing down on Rainbow road the day we were on it, but had been good prior to that.

More pics!! :P

I'm hoping to head down to Hanmer via Rainbow and then back through the Molesworth this coming summer.
Any tips on interesting side explorations?

Good camping in the Edwards Valley, Maling Pass and around Lake Tennyson.
Need to get lock codes from DOC for Maling and Edwards.
