Another what tyre thread - pls help me decide!

Post by stu_71 »

Hi,

After loads of research and reading lots on the forum I have it down to 2 tyres: Kuhmo KL71 or Maxxis Bighorn 762 (285/75/16), but I'm still not really sure!

I have a set of Pirelli Scorpion ATR's on a set of rims at the moment for general road use but I want to another set of tyres to put on a spare set of rims so I can swop the rims over for off-road mud use. My "off road" will be traveling to and up river beds, muddy high-country farm tracks and occasional snow, for hunting trips in the SI.

They are both a similar price so can anyone help me decide please? How do they last? Grip? One better in mud? Better on tarseal? etc

Any advice from those that have used either would be greatly appreciated or is there a better tyre for me in the same price range?

Thanks

I've had both. The kl71s were a wee bit better in mud IMO but wore faster. Bighorns seem good so far. I'd go for the bighorns

just a question, why would someone prefer the maxis bighorn 762s over the 764? I'm not stirring, I just would like to know, for future reference.

Good question. I dont know the answer but for me it's because I cant get the 764's in 285, they only do 265

Have run both in 235 85 16 on my truck on high country station and on river beds. Would not go kuhmo again. Had 4 punctures and two tyres that ended up with large bulges and were replaced by local agent. Whereas the Bighorns have had no issues and have done the same k's that the kuhmos have done but still have a bit of life left.
Definately go 762's as the 764's on my workmates truck have worn really quick compared to all other tyres he has run and didn't have a lot of grip compared to old 762's he had

Well that's a good enough reason.
I have heard that the 762 may have a deeper tread than the 764?

The 762 don't have ridiculous sidewall letter sizing

I have a set of KL71 and the tyre guys told me they are better for the rocks.
As I found out they are better for the rocks. durrr
The tight center tread block that makes then good on the road will pack with mud and may cause dramas (even when aired down).
I only have one set of tyres for the ute so I need something that's more biased to road use to get me to work with the muddies.

Wear wise 30,000km of mixed on/off road and 7mm of tread left. (14 original)

I had KL71's on a LWB Safari. They were wearing stupidly fast, and after 3 punctures through the tread on gravel roads, I sold them on and replaced them with Maxxis Trepadors. Couldn't be happier now. It may have been due to the heavier truck as others seem to rave about KL71's but never again for me. It wasn't driven hard on the seal, and the punctures weren't on particularly knarly tracks. Gravel forestry roads - admittedly with fairly coarse gravel, but no-one else had punctures, and I've driven the same roads several times since on the treps...

my ks will not be a good comparison i bent the hell out of the diff and chewed the tyre out but 15odd k, at this stage, they may be softer but would get a set in a heart beat, actually got a set of 35s in the shed...
great on road and bloody good off it.

Yeah same this end re kl71's this latest set will be my last ,,,wearing really fast and for some reason alot noisier than my last set ,,,i buy them pretty sharp but i think the bighorns will be my next pick ,,,,,so consensus is 762 over the new 764??

I'm in the same boat here, and the 762's sound like the go. But I'm just wondering how they'll go in sand? Anyone had experience with tyres with gaps like 762's in the sand?

EDIT: Here's some more info on MT762s
