After a rear diff for my landcruiser. Current one is very noisy. How common are the factory lockers? And would they fit into the standard carrier? Am wanting to get a locker while I have it apart so would be keen on a locked unit or just standard

Get a hilux one and slap it in there,

Yes should do, better to get one of the stronger ones for the rear of a Surf, often called a V6 one as opposed to a 4cyl one.

I had the impression that the prados used 9.5" diffs and surfs had 8"?

No, pretty sure that you will find that KZJ and LJ are 8
