looking to fix my 249 transfer case. the vc is locked up. the fellas on the jeep forum claim a swap for the 242 is a good idea but i like the awd, anyone got a 249 or a vc i can buy? or know where i could find one?

I was a pickapart recently, there was a 1996 Grand Cherokee with the I6 motor here at the pick a part... their price is $209 for gbox & transfer, or 99 for just the transfer. As is, no returns etc.
It would be cheap to mainfreight the transfer case only down there.
I can go check the mileage/specification of the Jeep if you want. Who knows if its fried though.

Or from Oz, I'm finding some parts are cheaper from OZ once you include freight. OZ is def cheaper than NZ, and quicker too.

Thanks Bubba for your vote of confidence. I'm still learning myself after tinkering with my Wrangler for 11 years now.
Oz is a good option but sometimes going to the source is easier.
There is a second hand supplier in Melbourne, I'll find the details and post them here. I got my rear light from them a few years ago for the Grand.

Right however notwithstanding in any event, I checked it out today and unfortunately the whole trans is gone already.

Ok Fish. Remembering from your other thread, what you have bought is a 97 Grand Cherokee with 4.0l engine. It has NV249 transfer case. You have four options:
- Find another 249 and swap it in.
- Find and swap with a 242 as some Grand Cherokees did come out with this. It was mostly in XJs though. It still gives your AWD option.
- Find and swap with a 231. Plenty to find. You would be encouraged to put a fixed yoke (SYE kit).
- Find a new viscous coupler and put that in after tearing your existing 249. Remember VC is a sealed unit in these, unlike later version Grands with 247.
If you go with the forth option, you have four options:
- Buy a replacement unit from a vendor with a kit to service everything (eg. http://www.quadratec.com/products/52449_1570.htm or http://www.rustysoffroad.com/viscous-co ... n-kit.html or http://www.amazon.com/Crown-Automotive- ... B000FQ7C14)
- Buy a replacement unit from Ebay (eg. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-ZJ-1997-19 ... 06&vxp=mtr).
- Buy a replacement unit from a dealer. Getting from US would be around a $1k. Locally from a dealer, better not ask. If you do, call them while sitting down.
- Buy just the viscous coupler (http://www.jeep4x4center.com/viscous-co ... 220aa.html)

I have used Quadratec for many many things. And lately DHL Express has done some great shipping rates. My last box was only USD30 to ship, delivered here in 5 days from Quadratec.

right looks sound, i have no issue getting things from states, so far ive had no problems, only this being biger and more expensive, was wondering if there would be import fees or tax at our end? no sure how that works.

No, no swaps. I did have to rebuild mine after the output shaft was bent out of shape on my 231.
242 out of a ZJ or XJ would be a good option. Later model WJ use progressive coupler which is more reliable than the viscous coupling.

so judging by my tag i have a 249 made in aprill 97. so a 242 from that year should bolt right on and have the same shaft length. shit i hope im right.
then all ill need is a shock boot to cover the shaft and bob yer auntie.
