Slipping out of Low Box

Post by nigelb »

Hi My 70 Series has recently jumped out of the low box a couple of times. Not out of gear, but the transfer lever jumps from L4 to N, ie putting me in neutral. It seems to happen when I'm moving along slowly on a bumpy track / riverbed, it hasn't happened when I've had my foot down going for it.
Does anybody have any idea what is causing this? Is it simple or is it a sign of a transfer box problem, eg broken teeth etc, requiring a big fix :?:

Cheers

Transfer case woes

Post by cruiser_beast »

Hey, dont know to much about it if its jumping out of gear, my gearbox does it to 5th gear in my landcruiser, although this is a different thing to a transfer case it may be a similar reason to it jumping out.

http://www.mechanicmatt.com says

"Transfer case noisy or jumps out of 4x4 low range
Transfer case not fully engaged. Stop the vehicle, shift into Neutral and then engage 4L.
Shift linkage loose, worn or binding. Tighten, repair or lubricate linkage as necessary.
Shift fork cracked, inserts worn or fork binding on the rail. Disassemble and repair as necessary."

I noticed that i have a bit of a whine or knock from my transfer case, if spun by hand it clicks about every quarter turn of the front drive shaft approximately, i read on a site that toyota transfer cases r almost bullet proof, but the idler shaft can wear resulting in noises, could this be my cause, is a transfer case rebuild very involved:)???lol

Cheers

my 70 series does the same thing except it will actually wriggle out of low, even just sitting there idling.
i had a wee nosey and i reckon, in my case that the rubber boots around the stick are getting stiffer, and or the engine/ gbx mounts are gotting softer and the result is more than normal pressure on the stick/ more vibration.

so i wound the adjustment out a bit, if that dosent work i might bend the stick a bit so it sits more central.
the other way i suppose would be to use a knife and loosen the rubber boots, but thats just asking to get wet feet.

How do you mean you wound the adjustment out a little bit? Where is this adjuster?

its easiest to see if you take the cover off around both sticks.
but is reachable from underneath.

the transfer lever piviots on the side of the case and from half way down that there is a linkage that goes to the actual selector on the box.

just behind the where the link joins the stick there is a lock nut that needs winding off (14mm)
take out the spilt pin and main pin that connects the lever to the linkage
now just wind the end of the linkage one way or the other depending on which way it needs to go. i did about three turns longer but that may be too much as now there is a little presssure on the stick at the front.
reconnect, pin and split pin then check, if ok tighten locknut.

hope you can follow that its a little tricky from underneath but entirely possible,

i also pulled the inner rubber boot down so it is completely insideout
i figure that it will not push as much down lower.
