Headlights from the US on my 3rd gen surf

Post by RimfireNZ »

Hey guys,
I imported some 4th gen Hilux Surf (99-02) headlights from the US and I was going to install them on my 3rd gen (96). Apparently they bolt straight in as it was only a facelift model.

I haven't put them in yet, but it just occurred to me that these lights will be for right hand drive ones.

In my current lights you can see there are some slits in the lens to angle the light, but on these new ones they have a clear lens. The new ones appear to have a couple of little bits in the reflector to do the same job.

Am I going to be able to get away with using these? Is there anything I can do to make this work other than get some reflectors for left hand drive lights?

Hopefully this wasn't a waste of time. If it is I might have to try doing an HID conversion with these.

Lhd lenses cannot be used in an rhd vehicle, the beams are totally different. Out of interest what did they cost you? You can buy them here in nz

And to answer your original question yes you will need rhd reflectors.

As above. There is a place (In Hamilton) I think that can convert them to RHD insides, but it was $$$ when the company I worked for had a set done for a Tundra (man what a cock up that whole job was! )

Three hundred and ninety five f*cking dollars plus gst??? Yeah... right...

NZ retailers are so greedy.

For the set (new) was $80 NZ plus $40~ shipping.

Well bugger. Looks like I have to go shopping overseas again as I refuse to pay a 400% price hike over what you pay at an overseas retailer (3-4x price hike seems to be the magic number for tools, guns, knives... all of that kind of stuff).

And the 99-02 are not 4th gen, just a 3rd Gen updated...... Winch bar mounts are different, front lights and some interior cosmetics.
