Mud truck trailer wanted
Any one got or know any one that may want to part with their braked, tilt tandem transport trailer for cash in hand. Not lots of cash but enough to reflect maybe a little work like taillights or slight paint or one or two tyres type of cash. Have a limited budget so might have to wait until some this pops it's head up so no major rush and will just keep hiring for now.
Pm me if you know any thing.
Thanks
Bernhard

Re: Mud truck trailer wanted
the cheep ones (if there is such a thing as a cheep trailer
) are usually the old past their useby date rusty ones without any brakes, its worthwhile scratching a bit more money together and get a reasonable nick galv trailer it'll cost less in the long run, be more reliable, last longer and have a better resale when you want to get rid of it

Re: Mud truck trailer wanted
Agreed. Too cheap is probably more trouble than its worth unless you can weld and have cheap access to steel. I paid $3k for mine, chassis had been beadblasted, some rusty crossmembers replaced, and repainted, new deck timber with chequerplate over the top, LED tail lights, solid as f*** (read: heavy), load sharing/equalizing springs, "just needed new brake calipers and replumbing as previous owner had removed because they had siezed up and didnt need them"... well, the caliper mounts didnt match any standard trailer calipers, neither did the disc diameter, and someone had drilled and taped the hubs with grease nipples..good idea you say..except someone had been inclined to just keep pumping general purpose grease in there so the bearings were toast (just passed wof too). So new hubs, discs, calipers, coupling and plumbing $900 plus welding new caliper mounts on. Lesson learned haha, still not a bad total for a good solid trailer tho just a lot more work than I was hoping

Keep your eyes out, deals do come up.
My car trailer cost me $300. plus $590 for brake kit, plus $800 of new steel and a little time to repair.
My digger trailer I got new from an engineer that had just built it for himself for $2k cash, then I put brakes on it, $590.
So two big trailers for less than $5k.

Re: Mud truck trailer wanted
Thanks so much guys, I know the work cheap is not what I normally use. I meant I cant afford the real nice $4K plus transporters as nice as they are.
There are a few on Trade Me but are advertised as transporters but have no brakes??? There is no way im going to even touch that dangerous set up despite them looking real nice and apparently towing well. Risk out weighs safe driving for sure. And the legal allowable total laden weight also goes over the limits.
I will have to just top the budget up each week till it gets in line with the better braked tilt tandems out there. But please keep and eye open, don't mind it being any where on the North Island. I will just go and get it no problem.
Thanks again.

Re: Mud truck trailer wanted
None suspension trailer or not. I know they bounce more and are harder on the trailer but I see so many for sale and wonder if my situation would force me to get one with springs............They tow awesome on the open road which is great.
I do mostly sealed roads till I get to the turn offs then its metal roads. My off road club grounds is in Ngaroma Forest which is 23km of metal road. First 3 km is ok then its a 30kph drive the rest of the way cause of the narrow and pot holed infested road. Im worried this will cause cracking or bending long term.
Your thoughts please guys.

Re: Mud truck trailer wanted
my one (above) doesn't have suspension, it sits behind the car sweet as no matter what speed you go with surf on, hangs on in the corners fine, bounces a little bit empty but I've towed sprung trailers that bounce too.
we used to live 30kms up a really rough metal road up the east coast above gisborne and it towed fine, the wheel bearings have all been replaced since.
the only thing you have to watch is the trailer needs to sit flat to keep all wheels even, on our adventra its ok.

Re: Mud truck trailer wanted
I don't have much experience with larger tandems with no suspension, but my 500kg log splitter (heavier than my car trailer) bounces like a bastard without suspension. I cant see how a little extra length and 2 more wheels could change this.
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

Unsprung trailers use the loaded vehicles suspension to absorb bumps etc. they generally tow very well even on metal roads.
You tie the vehicle by its diffs or wheels and allow the body to move.
That said they are horrible unloaded.
Before buying go to vtnz or similar as i thought i read they were changing the wof requirements for vehicles without suspension including trailers

Re: Mud truck trailer wanted
Some transporters are built without suspension to keep them low. The only real problem with this is the tyres become the suspension and will wear out faster.
There is no real need for a low trailer when you are towing a bush truck, you only need them for low cars.

From a clearance point of view yes, but IMHO you still want to keep it low as practically possible to avoid a high COG and keep it stable while towing. Mate has a ex hire trailer (cowleys) and I have used it a few times, I have found the key is to balance it right so there isn't too much weight on the towball, this avoids having the nose of the tow vehicle pointing to the sky and ride is a lot nicer, rear doesn't bottom out over bumps. It is quite a low trailer, deck is just over 1ft off the ground and as a result it handles corners very nicely with no roll at all.

that's where having the right tow vehicle that's capable of towing the load is important otherwise it just gets plain scarey and dangerous if its overloaded
